Put me down in the offended catagory when I just got a trade in offer on my RX. So I've got to sell it myself. Where do you guys go to sell your cars on-line? The cars for sale section here is not very active, and I've only got about a week before our new car is in our garage. There are a lot of RX's down here in SoFL.

Anyone care to share what a reasonable selling price would be for a low mileage (37,200 miles) 2001 RX300, that I've owned since new.


1) One (first) Owner; Low Mileage; 37,100 miles
2) New Premium tires – Dueler H/L Alenza – at 36,300 miles
3) Near perfect condition; always garaged; never smoked in; babied
4) Full scheduled maintenance with oil changes every 5,000 miles or 6 months; recent four wheel alignment and balance
5) Clean CARFAX (1/1/08), never any problems or issues
6) Purchased new in September, 2001; Clear title
7) Full power seats with memory, windows, steering, brakes, locks
8) Sunroof; Cold AC; Cruise control; power mirrors; tilt wheel
9) Dealer installed full wood package
10) SilverStar Ultra HID headlights high & low + fogs
11) AM-FM Stereo; 6 CD in dash player with cassette audio system
12) Rear Spoiler
13) Towing/Camper Package; Full tinted windows
14) Anti locking Brakes; 4 wheel ABS
15) Electrochromatic Exterior Mirrors and auto dim rear view mirror
16) Traction Control: folding rear sear; Cargo cover

NADA Trade-In Value is $17,050,

Edmunds Trade-In Value is $15,358 and,

Kelly Trade-in Value is $14,850.

What do you folks think I should ask? I'v got to advertise it starting tomorrow.

Add 1500 to the trade-in value that was offered to you. [Typically it is 1000 to 2000].

The price also is depends on the local market, so you need to check local papers.

Good point. Locally I see 2001 RXs advertised in the $14 to 16K range, usually with a lot more miles, but many from dealerships, so presumabley they have some warranty.

My dealer offer of $11,500 plus, say $1,500 would be only $13,000. Still well below the NADA, Edmunds or Kelly trade in estimates. Disappointing, but maybe that's just reality.

If your base warranty has not run out, you can offer the buyer an option of "you" purchasing an extended warranty thru Lexus and pay additional fee to be transferred to the new buyer. After confirming/consulting/negotiating a price with your sales person, you can advertise yours as .. extended warranty available for additional price.

I have not used carmax but they will give you another price point.

I value the vehicles that I have above KBB etc, but the street value depends upon availability and demand. If the used vehicle market has plenty to offer, it will be unlikely to get what you hope to get.


With a high trade-in value, you need to keep in mind the reduce tax burden, as you are taxed on the difference of new purchase and trade-in.

Last bit of advice, if you sell to an individual yourself .... make sure the title is transferred and remember cashiers checks can be cancelled by the seller [I had incorrectly assumed that cashiers checks are good as cash]

I've got some learning to do about selling a car myself. I never knew someone could actually cancel a cashiers check. So it's a wire transfer or cash, if I get lucky.

It's a Florida 2WD car.

I'm in Ft. Lauderdale, which may be part of the problem.

It seems most people down here drive rather new cars, and trade them every 3 or 4 years, at most. Anything older than that is really looked down on.

When I was up in DC I rarely saw any car over 10 years old.

Having lived in South Florida I very well remember that 3/4 year tradeoff of many friends and family. My parents and relatives are more the long-term, modification type so it always came as a surprise to our neighbors.

I am in Dayton, Ohio, just purchased an 2000 RX300 with 100,000 miles for $10K. I knew, and trusted the owner as he had it serviced every 5000 miles as Lexus recommends. (I looked at all the records.) I purchased a 2001 3 years ago, with 30,000 miles for about $25,000. Probably paid too much, but my wife liked it, it had the nav system and was clean. Along with the Certified Lexus warranty.

Not bad on that price for the 2000.

I got my 99 RX300 back in early 2002 with about 40k and paid about $25k or so.

I know Dayton quite well. My cousin David lives in Troy just north of there and we always enjoyed going down to Wright Patterson.

Good luck, I'm in South Florida too (Weston) and know how the dealers here are. I also have on '01 RX that I'm going to hold to for a while. Just had the 90K mile service done today as a matter of fact.

Wright Patterson is a big salvation to the Dayton area as it provided alot of good paying jobs. The Dayton area has lost alot of tool and die jobs over the past 20 years. The Museum has quite a bit of history too! I live 20 minutes away, and should get out there more often.

I am new to this site, but really enjoy it. I spent about an hour trying to program my door openers yesterday. I had been unsuccessful, and logged on to the site, and did a search. After reading several threads, that explained it in a better way than the manual, I was successful.

I also checked around for comparable SUV's for $10,000 and found I could purchase Ford Explorers and Chevy Tahoes, with almost the same amount of miles, but just a few years newer. Of course those are dealer prices, but they aren't even close to the RX300. Hopefully, I won't experience the tranny problems.
