I have a 99 rx300 that needs an engine. can I use a camry engine? what other vehicles can the engine come out of or is the rx300 the only vehicle this engine came in.

The 1MZ-FE VVT-i is also in the ES300, I think it was also used to serve the Sienna, Camry V6 and Solara but I'm not sure if those are VVT-i models of the engine. I'm pretty sure you could use 4-cylinder's in your RX300 with some custom mounting, try looking into a 5S-FE or 2AZ-FE if you decide to, the original Toyota Harrier came out with these motors.

You could use one out of a V6 Highlander, the other ones aren't exact fits do to differences in the throttle bodies.

well the camry engine is a 1mz but does not look like it is vvti how much difference would that make?

Big difference, as there is large power difference and some of the connections are not quite the same, plus RX300s/Highlanders have dual throttle bodies and Camrys don't.

so I need to be looking for a highlander or rx300 engine and thats basically the only engine thats the same?

yes...that particular design of the 1MZFE wasn't used in any other vehicle.

I would actually take one from a 99-00 RX if I were in your shoes, as come to think about it, I remember there were some minor changes in the 2001-2003 RX300 engines, PCV for one.

Lexmex, i have a 99 RX300 the engine had been changed out by the previous owner, is there any way i can tell what year the replacement is. I'm still having problem with the tranny but i changed out the PCV and it is the metal one not the push in kind so i know its not a 99.

Check the VIN on the block if possible and then run it. That will tell you what year. RX motors aren't that hard to find, but can be a pain getting in. I went to a 330 engine out of a 2006 and didn't have too many issues.
