Default 01'AWD average MPG

The manual says for AWD the MPG should be 18 (local) and 22 (highway). But my 01'AWD with all options (except for Nav) constantly averaged at 17.5 (all local & city expressway). I'm using mixed 89/93 fuel and almost always drive with a passenger (120lb). During Thanksgiving weekend I drove the RX first time on a real inter-state highway for about 4 hours and the average MPG still showing 17.8 (I thought it should go up to 22 or something). What MPG do you guys get from your AWD?

p.s. I had 3000 miles and I'm talking about the average MPG reading, not the live reading.

How long has it been since you have reset your average MPG meter? The longer you leave it, the longer it takes to effect the average. So, a trip on the highway won't have as much of an effect. Try resetting in one time just as you get on the highway. Then you can get a realtime average of your highway mileage.

AYour mpg will improve. I have about 12000 miles on my RX now and am noticing an improvement. I got about 23.5 average on the highway averaging 57mph - there was lot of traffic. I was going 80mph much of the time. My RX is FWD too.

My Rx has 5400 miles and a accumulative average of 18.6 mpg. I have noticed that it has gradually improved.

I assumed that it has increased during the break in period.

I may reset and see what happens.

I'm typically averaging 18.5 mpg w/city and highway per tank of 88 octane gas and auto air. I got 26 mpg on my 347 mile ride back from my dealer at a steady 65 mph and auto air. Car was "brand new". Straight city stop and go averages 17.5-18 mpg. Hope this helps.

Talking

17.2 mpg over 37k miles, 99 AWD almost entirely urban/suburban.

BTW, in order to increase your average to 22 mpg from 17.5, assuming 75 mph x 4 hours, starting with 3k miles and ending at 3.3k miles, your RX would actually have to end up making 21.4 gallons of gas!!!!

3k miles at 17.5 mpg = 171.4 gal consumed. 3.3k miles at 22 mpg = 150 gal consumed.

The RX is frugal, but I don't think it's going to turn into an oil well/refinery.

I have 5700 on my 2001 RX, AWD. I've been averaging 22.5 MPG on trips (most of my driving) and about 21 on shorter hauls.

This is terrific... my '96 Jeep JGC with Quadra-Trac could occasionally eke out 22.5 on a long highway trip, but wound up with about 18 everywhere else. And the RX's acceleration is far better.

I'm hoping these numbers will improve over time as well.

Hey, you guys are doing great! I just put 1,500 miles on my new '02 LX 470 and, on a 3 day trip, only averaged 15.7. I expect that to improve only slightly after it is really broken in.

What's with the "average mpg meter". How come I didn't get one in mine? - sob sob LOL.

Well, Phil, perhaps it's because the LX470 makes the RX300 look like a Geo Metro...

Heck, the LX must weigh more close to three tons, no?

Lexus knows you don't want to know the mpg on an SUV as big as the LX. They know it doesn't get good gas mileage, you know it's doesn't, so they thought, why show it
