Typically the sensor is an on and off (low resistance to gnd [short] or high resistance to ground [open]).

You check resistance of the two extreems by forcing the float(?) with a VOM.

The proper way would be to consult the repair manual where you can look at the specied ohmage or test procedure.

OR

risk it by shorting the sesor lead and observing the dash lamp.
