Having had a RX 300 AWD the past few months and having driven a girlfriends CR-V, its really not even close. The only reason to get the CR-V is if you really want a manual, you like a rougher ride and tons more roadnoise and your going blind b/c that is one UGLY SUV

I do think the CR-V was the small entry level SUV leader until the new Rav-4 came out. I honestly PREFER the 01 model. It does an admirable job of doing everything good.

The RX 300 created the car based luxury SUV segment. Its dash is original as were the looks. To me, its built like a tank. I do average 21mpg with AWD but if I am going to worry about gas, I will trade every Lexus in and buy a Segway

If you are not into the image and prestige of owning the Lexus it sounds like the CR-V will be just fine for you. The advantage of the CR-V would be as you describe, the ease of adding an aftermarket navigation system due to the traditional 2DIN space. The manual transmission that you like, cheaper service and maintenence, cheaper replacement parts, cheaper insurance, and no potential sludge problem. The advantage of the RX300 is the image and prestige, smoother ride and comfort, more power from the V6.
