Oil Filters - Which One?
Have a 2001 RX300 and purchased a filter at the dealership a year of so ago, got a 90915-YZZB9. Had oil changed at the dealership since then, but deciede to change myself yesterday and they used a 90915-YZZD1. Are they the same?

Toyota oil filters are simple - almost.
Toyota only makes 3 sizes of oil filters - one for 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engines. There are lots of part numbers, though, because the number changes based on the country in which the filter was made.
There's been some debate on the forum about which is the best one and who really makes each for Toyota.
IMHO, the one made in Japan is the best - 90915-YZZB9. Most dealers in the U.S. don't stock it, though, because it's the most expensive one. There was a filter out of Japan some time ago made with an even fancier filter element (90915-20003), but my understanding is that it's been discontinued.
The number two choice is the one made in Thailand - 90915-YZZD1. That's what most dealers carry, because it's the best combination of quality and value. Going rate is about $5 - $6 at Toyota dealers, or $4 - $5 on the Internet.
Last is the one made in the U.S.A. (
) - 90915-YZZG1. Unlike the other two above, this filter doesn't come with the gasket pre-oiled and wrapped in plastic. It looks pretty cheap, too, compared to the others. This should be the cheapest one for dealers in this country to get, but I've found a dealer that carries them is asking more for it than other ask for the Thailand filter.

I used the K & N oil filter for my SC300 cost$12 + tax. Last saturday I picked up a 90915-YZZD1 from toyota dealer for $6.35, it looks nice and the design is A+. The filter fit both the SC and RX but I'm still waiting to find out how the filter perform before installed it into my RX and SC.

LOL.
I actually think the K&N is a prettier filter. It has a a square piece on top to make it easier to screw on and off when relplacing instead of having to use an SST for the Toyota filter. Saves my uncle a lot of trouble when replaced my oil filter.

Its A Oil Filter
Gosh, its a oil filter, not some piece of art.
It is what the filter has on the inside, not the outside. , Amsoil makes a filter that has what it takes to filter properly, who cares what it looks like outside, its how many mirocrons the filter filters down to. the strength of the steel wall, does it have a by-pass valve inside. I am sure that K & N filters are like Amsoils too. Its whats inside that counts.

Do some research, you will people claiming FRAM filter material falling off. BOSCH does not have a functional bypass valve. How about oil filter failing two primary functions: filtering particles that are big enough to cause long term engine and bearing damage and maintain proper oil flow when it is clogged.

I am probably one of the few people on this forum who pushes his RX to the limit on a daily basis and like a mad dog come race nights. For the last 55,000 miles...only K&N filters on a variety of Mobil 1 weights (5W30, 10W30, 15W50, 5W50 and now 0W40)
