The service manager at the local Lexus dealer here was bragging to me recently that his " man " can change a rear main oil seal in less than 3 hours. They STILL charge the customer 6-8 hours labor!

The business angle and profit doesn't stop with the sale of the car - it's just beginning at that point!

rear main seal
I recently purchased a 2000 rx300 and I am experiencing the oil leak described in this forum. Here is another forum describing the same problem. (http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/for...hp/t27148.html) It has a link to a picture that looks exactly like my problem. My question is: is the rear main seal considered part of the engine? The dealer I bought the car from will cover 100% of engine repairs but only 50% of others. Thanks for your help.

This is literrally a border line case.
I would say the seal is part of engine.
My rationale is that the two blocks are engine and transmissiion, When you seperate them the seal is part of the engine block.
There will be gaskets etc involved and the once they open up they may reccomend couple of things to be done to the transmission side .... so expect some trickle down effect into the 50% bucket.

Before any one replaces the main seal, one should investigate why did the problem occure.
Possibilities are:
1. wear
2. Transmission mounts broken/worn
3. Engine mount broken/loose.
4. Rough idle.
Please add if I am missing other(s).

I took my car back to the dealer and they replaced the oil pan seal hoping to fix the problem. It didn't. I have now taken the car back and they are investigating the main real seal. This site mentions that the seal was redesigned to fix the leak problem. Can anyone verify that this is true? I have not been able to find any recalls or investigations regarding the rear main seal for a 2000 Lexus RX300.
Thanks.
Thanks.

My 2000 RX300 has an oil leak that Lexus could not fix. In two years, they changed the cam seal twice, rear main seal once and it is still leaking. Engine mounts are examed, they are OK. I took a sample off the oil on one of the suspension control arm from the passenger side. It is seal oil, clear, not black as engine oil, not red as ATF, PS reservior is full (that idiot service manager told me it is PS, yeah, why is it full after months of leaking? )
Will try another Lexus dealer, not that I care Lexus is shelling $ to warranty service my RX work, I just want the problem to be fixed before my powertrain expires.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of an extended warranty. What is frustrating is that the research that I did prior to deciding to purchase it all pointed to the the car being reliable with low maintenance costs. Guess I was completely wrong.
