How many of you switched to winter tires, and do you switch back to all seasons in the summer?

I changed from the OEM Bridgestones to Michelin crossterrains (all seasons) and they are amazing. Last winter we were all over the road. This year in 6+ inches on the road no sliding issues. It cuts through like there is no snow. I am amazed, since so many people told me that the RX is bad in the snow etc...

Are those winter tires or all season just better than my current Bridgestones( )?

Two snowstorms, both over 8 inches. Goodyear RSA's preformed great. I have a very steep driveway and the RX climbed like a tractor.

If I could, I would send some your way for you to experience, lol. Two snow storms in 2 weeks, 31 inches of snow in upstate NY here.

I wished I lived in TX or AZ too.

I've had good luck with the stock Goodyear Integritys on the all wheel drive Rx here in upstate NY. No problems. It's more of a testament to the good job the road crews do around here. I know how much everyone hates these tires in this forum so no need to start on me. Your mileage may vary.

Re:Texas, Don't worry about it eyebike, I lived in Austin a few yrs ago and they had a little ice storm. The whole area was paralized and all you could smell was burning rubber all day.

Been through 15 winters in Toronto without ever using winter tyres, I drive RX300, Camry and Jetta on all-seasons. I make sure that I change my tyres every 70k (KM). Toronto gets its share of snow and all-seasons does the job but on icey roads nothing works and winter tyres I find give false sense of security .. just drive with braking distance !!

Toronto GTA (and the whole Hwy401 in general) does a great snow removing job. Last Thanksgiving (US) I drove the 400h to Toronto, and got hit by the first snow storm of the year. The car with stock Michelin worked just fine, but I don't think the car will work as well in more hilly roads. After that weekend I finally got my snow tires delivered, but since then, no big snow storm. We have a pretty mild winter in Ohio this winter.

I agree with you on the ice part though. No matter what tires you have, driving on ice with no traction is no traction.

When I go back to the U.S., I plan to switch to 235-50-18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I agree that with ice (and I have been through that weather in Washington, DC) no tire will save you and you need to go really slow.

I do see your point.

However the winter tires of 10-15 years ago do not compare with the winter tires of today. If you are keeping your vehicles for a long time, its worth the investment.

I have a floor jack in my garage and I make good use of it at least 6 times a year -- 3 cars, switching summer to winter tires and the other way around. So, yes, I think the investment is well worth it.
