Welcome to CL.

Is the ignition fob inside the vehicle when the rear lid won't close? If so, that may (?) be a security-feature to keep the fob from getting locked inside. Try putting the fob in your pocket, standing behind the door, and THEN try and shut it. That might do the trick. If not, then you may have a wiring, sensor, or electronic problem. A 2013 RX will (probably) still be under the tail end of the 4/50 bumper-to-bumper warranty, unless it has been driven a lot of miles.

You could also try our RX specific model and Maintenance forums....here is the one for your 2013 RX:

Thanks for the response. The fob is not in the vehicle. It just started doing it randomly today.

It sounds stupid but trying opening it manually and closing it manually. Then try with buttons again.

Since it worked for the OP, that's quite an interesting "reset" procedure. I guess it gave the vehicle some extra time to "think things over" and start it's unlock process from scratch without any "internal signal confusion"!

I have a 2011 Rx350. The battery just got replaced, in the vehicle. now the back power lift gate won't open or shut unless you do it manually. I have looked at manual, and online. I can't find anything. The button inside won't open it, my fob won't open it, and the button on the door to close it won't close it. Any help Please and Thank you. I have tried everything.

Open the glove compartment and confirm the position of the tail gate master switch.
