Toyota not so cheap
2012 rx350 with 49,000 miles on it. Well I have been getting oil changes and tire rotations at the toyota dealership for a couple of years, 59.00. I needed an inspection sticker but knew my front brakes were about 2mm, so off I went. Of course the service writer told me it failed because you need 2 mm+ in this state and he showed me the pads. The rears looked only 1/3 used so he gave me a price to do the fronts 530!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I looked at first and thought it was a great deal for both, right! Had them done locally for 320.00 with quality rotors and pads. I am 66 and used to do my own but for 130 labor it is worth it not to get down on the ground any more. BTW the service writer got awful snobby when he knocked off 40 dollars and I still wouldn't bite.

Some service advisors are as bad as used car salesmen. I witnessed a few trying to "sell" services to unsuspecting customers.
That's how dealers make money, so no surprises there. This goes across the board.

The general populace is pretty stupid when it comes to car care. Either they'll let the pads wear down to the caliper itself (most extreme case Ive seen is the claw of the caliper was almost completely worn away...), or pay the exorbitant fees given by the service writer (which they are guilty of themselves for the extreme mark ups that you will typically see given to older folks, women, and teens/young adults) assuming that's what it costs, allowing the dealer to say that's the price when everyone else is paying those prices. It does depend on the service writer though, not all of them are bad. Always shop around/ask CL/Google, if some of them are necessary, when you're given a list of services and prices.
