That makes sense.

I might offer a small bit of advice. take the battery out of it, maybe store it in the glove box.

this will accomplish two things.

1. it will be sure that the fob doesn't activate at any point killing the battery or allowing the car to be started,
2. prevent someone from starting the car if they found it.

also this might be better for your wallet:

pretty sure you can have it cut to work on your car.

If I arrive at the hospital at 0300 and lose "A" key fob, as I almost did down the ambulance bay storm drain, I am not stuck.

The electronically shielded "B" key fob allows the vehicle to be locked.

Would "B's" electronic "registration" allow it to be locked in the vehicle using "A" key fob to lock the vehicle?

"Take the battery out."
Yes. Thank you. I wanted to hide the battery so "B" fob, if found, still would not work.
But wife does not want me to tear open its leather case.

Interesting! "A"ctive key fob locks RX350 from outside with "B" key fob lying on driver's seat!
"B" will unlock and lock from inside.

I'm pretty sure that a FOB either without a battery or with a dead FOB battery can still be used to start the car. You just touch the START button with the FOB rather than your finger. It's designed that way as a fail safe.

There are lots of places you could hide a FOB in the car. In my SC430 I hid it in the trunk, out of site, under the jack. If a thief breaks into your car I doubt he/she would rummage under the rear deck looking for a key.

Yes. Later thinking the system should detect the passive key fob circuitry even if fob battery has died. It just won't transmit any commands.
Thank you.

Yes, the procedure for a dead battery in the remote key fob to start the Lexus is to hold it touching the start button for at least two seconds and then foot on the brake and press START with the dead battery key fob.

Interesting! Is it detecting a very weak signal from the dead (actually very weak) battery?
Is it inducing a current in the FOB circuitry and detecting signal emission from the FOB?

IDK, I was told this is the procedure by Lexus.

It uses a passive RFID chip that is embedded into the smart key.
There are 2 coils involved in this process, one is wrapped around the start button of the vehicle and the other is in the key itself. Former activates the latter.
This is the same old tech used in transponders of mechanical keys.

Smart key operates differently by actually transmitting a signal, hence why it needs a battery to work and does not need to be in the same proximity as an RFID chip.
