Default Iphone 6, USB charging and no sound with phone navigation

I have a 2011 RX350. I can use google maps and mapquest via the iphone or bluetooth. BUT when I connect it to the USB port to charge as the map programs drain the battery I get no sound in any way from the iphone 6. As soon as I unplug it from charging I get sound again for my turn by turn instructions.
Is there something I'm missing? Shouldn't I be able to charge my iphone through the car and still use mapquest and hear my directions?

You need to select the USB Media audio input when the phone is connected to the car's USB jack. Then you should hear that audio.

Yes but then you cannot listen to the radio and have to listen to music on your iphone. Seems like I should be able to do both.....

FWIW, my MBZ operates in a similar manner anytime my iPod or iPhone is physically plugged-in. I'm unsure if this is just the way it is with iOS devices, or if it's coincidence at least 2 auto manufacturers on different sides of the globe implemented their USB/Media interface effectively the same way.

The system isn't capable of using two different audio devices simultaneously.

As mentioned, when you plug an iPhone into the USB port it goes into iPod mode. If you want to charge use the 12v power port. Then you'll have no issues plus it charges faster as it puts our more power. The USB wasn't meant to charge the phone.

The 2013 MDX works in exactly the same manner as well. While physically connected via USB cable, audio is only heard while in USB mode. The only exception is that phone audio may be heard while in radio mode is during a Bluetooth phone conversation.
