I sure hate to sound stupid -- and I've reviewed the manual, but I can't seem to find any way to have the tailgate open automatically other than by using the key fob or the button inside the car.

What I want to be able to do is walk up to the tailgate and press a button and step back and have it open. When my hands are full I can't be getting the key fob out of my pocket not lifting the gate manually. Is this doable?

Thanks for any tip on making this happen -- if it can happen!

Your dealer can program this for you. I had my 2010 and then my 2013 RX programed to open with one (or two) presses of the elongated button. That service is only free when used by first service.(??)

Gene, take a look at number 31 on page 5 of the Lexus Personalized Settings. The dealer can program the button on the tailgate for you to open when pressed. We also have this thread talking about it.

We had what you want done to our '11 RX350 at the dealer's for no charge. No guarantee your dealer will do it for free. I would make an appointment with the service advisor and be nice, polite, and say it's for your wife who has difficulty with the groceries, doesn't want to get the fob out of her Gucci purse, or some sob story like that. HA HA. BTW, we had to bring ours in twice for this because the first crew did not know how to do it, and the second person got it by guess and by golly. Such is life.
