Question Door chimes driving me nuts! ...and windows

I have a 2013 RX450h (Australian specification). The door chimes are driving me nuts - not only are they intrusive, they're inconsistent. Ignition on, any door open - nothing. Ignition in accessory mode, driver's door open - chimes ring. Open a passenger door, they stop - sometimes.

I can't see an option to turn these things off. I asked the dealer when it went in for service but they failed to understand there was a problem. However, since the service the auto window opening has ceased to operate. That looks like a dealer setting, which I'll have to get them to fix.

First world problems, I know, but I'd like to listen to some music while cleaning the car without having the constant "boing" all the time. Any ideas?

Was like that for a number of recent vintage vehicles I have owned over the years. Not unique to Lexus.

Like many topics, this has been discussed before here at CL. Have a look at this, as an example:

I usually bring along a laptop so I can stream music, news or European football (our soccer) matches while I am out in the shop.

Thanks RX330inFL. Yes I did a search before posting, but didn't come up with anything useful. I think the broom handle might not be a permanent solution.

I strongly recommend to not listen to music without the car fully on. From experience with various late model vehicles, your 12V battery will discharge quickly forcing you to boost your car.

what is more annoying to me is that, not chime, but full on steady ring when you have the driver's door open and the car in drive. And the seatbelt chime...

Sorry, I don't think anyone would be able to turn off the chime for you since its a safety issue.

If your not smart enough to wear your seat belt. Always. Then a chime is not going to stop you.

I wear my seatbelt at all times possible. The situation is perhaps if I was getting ready to get out of the car as a passenger at a busy/inconvenient stopping place, where you prime your exit by taking off your seatbelt early.

I've always worn a seatbelt since the father of my friend went through the windscreen - I was about 10 years old at the time. So a seatbelt chime isn't the issue - it's the annoying (and non-safety related) door open chime that applies so inconsistently.

Inside the door on the frame is a black stopper looking thing facing outwards. Press on it once to see if the beeping stops. Works on my 450h. But I usually reserve it for the times I accidentally open the door before shutting off the RXh. Like corrado said, it's not a good idea to leave the radio on.

Not a blanket statement though.

A new battery will play 2+ hours of music with no issues as the radio draws minimal current. But if at the end of it's 5 year life span, then yes, I wouldn't suggest it. Listening to the radio for 20mins while you clean the interior isn't going to harm anything.

AA battery is 1.5 volts and two of those will run a small radio for two hours. If everything (door lights, etc) are off, car radio will run significantly longer.

Are you in for a surprise then with the ACC mode. 2013+ models will turn off ACC every 20 minutes! It is absolutely useless when working on the car. I tried this when we just got the RX and had the XM subscription. After 5 restarts of the ACC, i was fed-up. The large battery in the trunk will last a very long time, but your nerves will not. There is no dealer setting that I know off to change this. I tried having them disable the chime, but that was a no-go. Seatbelt chimes were disabled, no problems there.
On my IS300, I pulled the key sense wire connector, and that was the end of it. With the smart keys system trying to outsmart not-so-smart users, it is a lost cause.

So, now that I have a portable Bose Soundlink bluetooth speaker, I simply stream music from my iPhone to it. No more cursing at Toyota engineers and "progress" in general, while I work on my cars.

Hmmm....week old RXh....ran the radio....reset it every so often....battery went dead....car does nothing...had to jump it.

Just remember those backup/jumping batteries that plug into the cigarette lighter outlet won't work and the rear hatch won't open from the outside either. SOS should work as its supposed to have it's own battery.
