Default Worth it to Get the Extended Warranty?

Took my 2010 RX 350 in for maintenance and also to fix the back hatch which was malfunctioning. Service guy said good thing it's under warranty, would have cost a thousand bucks to fix. Got me thinking about whether to extend the warranty. I have 1000 miles to go or until June 30 before it expires.

The financial services manager quoted me $2925.00 to extend the 4 yr 50,000 mile warranty to 8 years, $100,000 miles. I can't decide if it's worth it. Yes it would suck to pay $1000 to fix a back hatch or $2500 for air conditioning, but realistically do you think it pays for itself in the end?

My friend mentioned something about getting a warranty from a Toyota dealer at a cheaper price but I don't know if that would be the same coverage.

Any insight appreciated.

Conventional wisdom is no. The chances aren't high that you will have $3000 worth of maintenance over the next four years. That's assuming that you are the original owner and have done all your maintenance as required. Chances increase as you have to make assumptions for any previous owner(s).

Also likely that without the warranty, you can find a local shop to do any repairs and half of what it would cost to fix at the dealer. Especially with picking up your own parts at Sewell or Rock Auto.

My suggestion is to put the $3,000 into an interest bearing account and keep it on hand just in case. If you have any current issues, get them fixed under warranty now while you have it. Have a private mechanic go over the vehicle.

All of the above is moot if you are going to be changing your driving characteristics over the next 4 years/50,000 miles to heavy usage. Then it may make sense to get the warranty.

You can get a Lexus Platinum extended warranty at around 40% off that number from Troy Dietrich. No sales tax out of state either.
Then it's worth it.
Do a search on Troy.

Joeb;

Supposedly dealers are not allowed to sell warranties to out of state owners anymore. Mandated by Corporate.

Or I would've recommended Jerry.

My brother bought a warranty (on a Toyota)from Troy a few weeks after Jerry stopped selling them.
As far as I know,Troy is still selling warranties.
I guess an easy answer is for the OP going with email or a phone call to Troy.Worth a possible 40% savings.

May apply to Lexus vehicles only. But yes, if available, worth considering. But likely not needed on the RX.

I spoke with Troy Dietrich, very nice gentleman, however you must live in Massachusetts to avail yourself of this.

Anyone know where to get a discount warranty in Florida?

Extended warranty saved my butt recently, had the entirely steering column replaced to the tune of $3000.

Definitely worth it.

If you go for the warranty, read the fine print and discuss scenarios with the rep on things breaking or requiring replacement. Also ask specifically what is NOT covered and search back in this forum to see the frequency of the issue (if at all present). Things you might think are covered (besides the obvious like tires and brakes), may be flagged as wear-and-tear if and when it breaks and you're then out of luck... After this diligence, you can then make an informed decision. Good luck.

Extended warranty for a German - Of course.
Extended warranty for a Toyota ( Lexus) - Not needed.

My experience with the Japanese ( Toyota and Honda) is that they're built to last.
Our 2011 Toyota Prius with 125,000 miles on it ( before we traded it) was running great.
Brakes were still at 70%. tires were changed at 60,000 miles, but aside from the regular oil changes every 10,000 miles, we never encountered any problem. even with the hybrid system.

We used to have a T100 , odometer showed 490,000 plus when it was donated.

So, personally, i'll roll the dice and pay for "it" when it happens.

Now, with the Germans, you'll be in the shop a lot of times.
i remember our X5 back in 2001. so much head ache!
from battery being drained to a lot of gremlins ( electrical problems) here and there.
i wasted a lot of hours going back and forth.
Yeah, it helps that ALL were covered under warranty, but still Bimmers leave a bitter taste in my mouth.
i feel like with Performance, i'm trading reliability.
