Currently in a 2014 RX loaner and very curious as to what's circled in yellow in the photo attached. Seems as though it holds something and that it's stained with grease / oil...

is this new? I never thought to look under the lid since it doesn't full open to 90 degrees

It held a retractable ballpoint pen just fine.

Maybe the old tire pressure guage? But we're not supposed
to need that tool anymore correct? Except the display doesn't tell
you which tire psi is which (unless you manually recorded that information previously).

Anyone have their manual handy? Mine is in the secret compartment right now.

It is not present on the 2010 RX350.

It's present on my 2013 RX450h. I use it to hold a pen.

I just found it last week, holds a pen. Good place to put it so I don't have pens scattered everywhere in the car.

Yes, a skinny pen.

The "fat" pen popped out of the holder just after I took the photo. The thin pen stayed in place through several cover opening and closings.

I was surprised to see the same staining, much more noticeable in the photo, as the OP mentioned.

It looks like the lid in the newer RX's open wider than in my 2010 RX, or am I mistaken?

Wife's '11RX lid only opens about 45 degrees. What a poor design! Can I say PITA? It should stay up by itself at 90 degrees like my '04 Highlander.

I don't know about earlier models but the 2014 opens all the way. (Not certain why the images are being rotated.)

The center console lid open all the way and stays open on my 2013 RX. I keep a standard size Bic retractable pen in the clips and it's never fallen out in the 18 months I've been keeping it there.

There are no stains on mine.

Lexus has apparently modified the center console. Here's mine without the pen holder opened all the way. A member here modified his to open wider so it can be done. The pen part, well I could probably keep one in the top tray or in the console itself. Neat idea though.
