Default Newbie Seeking Advice on Purchasing a VSA

Hi - I recently purchased a used 2010 RX350 W/63K miles. I have an opportunity to purchase the Lexus Extra Care Platinum Plan (used) from a local Lexus Dealer. They have offered a 4 year/50K mile plan for $1950.00 as long as I pay $125.00 for the pre-inpsection. This is the $0 deductible option. Would you recommend I purchase the extended warranty and are they offering me a great rate on it? Thanks in advance.

Something doesn't sound right. It can't be an extended warranty if you're currently out of warranty. I'm assuming the Lexus dealer isn't the one who sold you the vehicle and isn't aware of your current actual mileage. My understanding is that you can only purchase the Platinum Plan while still within your factory warranty period.

What does the term (used) mean when describing the plan?

That is a lot of money, and a major profit item for the dealer, and I never buy them. It is a form of insurance, however this is one of the most reliable vehicles built and should not have any major failures for a long long time. It also depends on how long you plan to keep it and how afraid you are of paying for repairs. Does it cover the usual wear items like brake pads, rotors, wipers, batteries?

4 questions. Was this 2010 buit in 2009 or 2010. The 2010 built vehicles are better. Do you have a complete service history? How many prior owners? Does it have a clean CarFax or Autocheck report?

if it has had proper maintenance I doubt if anything worth $2000 will break within the next 4 years or 50000 miles.

Default Insurance

In my opinion, buying a VSC for a Toyota product is like living on a hilltop and purchasing flood insurance. A primary reason I own Lexus products is because of their stellar reliability and low cost of long term ownership. I personally could not justify spending money on a VSC that I felt was wholly unnecessary. Again, this is just how I roll.

100% agree. The problem owning a toyota is you keep on driving and driving and driving and eventually you get tired of it because they don'y die unless you get involved in an accident or a natural disaster or something like that .

Hi - thanks for your response (oohpapi44). I went to two different Lexus dealerships and they are both offering the same VSA on a used Lexus not purchased from them. It's my understanding I can't buy an extended warranty because that already expired at 50K, but they have both said I can purchase the Platinum Extra Care for the used Lexus I have. I think in terms of used, it's just not a CPO, so that's why I have to pay the pre-inspection fee. However, it would be covered the same once it passes the pre-inspection.

Clutchless - thanks for your response. No, it doesn't cover items that they consider you should be able to handle financially, or are minor. =) I looked at the carfax and it had two previous owners and they both had the vehicle serviced at Lexus regularly. I feel good that it has a service history with Lexus dealerships. The date of manufacture was 8/2010 .... am I good??

Two owners already? I would purchase the warranty in that case.

That's a great build date. That is a pretty high mileage car at around 18,000 miles per year. I think that the coverage is good peace of mind but also depends on how many miles per year you expect to drive. Will you use up the 50,000 miles well before the four years are up? I suppose you would want to get most of the four years. As some have said, these are generally reliable vehicles so there is a good chance that you won't get $2,000 worth of value, needless to say they price the extended warranty to make money not to lose money. It's insurance and peace of mind versus spending the money which is most likely a losing bet. But keep in mind, it's not a $2,000 losing bet, the no profit value might be $1,000 or $1,500. My gut tells me it is not terrible value and if it were me, I might take it. Thanks. Regards. Ned.
