Default Auto lift gate confusion

I have a 2010 RX350. I can power lift the lift gate with the remote or with the button on the dash but not with the release button on the lift gate. I took it into Woodhaven Lexus in Winnipeg to have it programmed to auto lift with the lift gate release. After some messing around I was informed it isn't an option in spite of what the manuals say. I have read on this forum of people having it programmed with no issues. My question - is it an issue with some vehicles or is it a special option outside of the option packages? Should it be corrected under warranty if it's not operational but should be?

You may want to try the dealer again. Perhaps speak to their "Technology Specialist". It's a customizable feature changed by the dealer.

Take your manuals and politely show them:

Section 6-2 Customization
Customizable features
Pages 627-632

Section 1-2 Opening, closing and locking the doors

They know it's in the manual as I stated. What the Tech and service writer said is it's not an option on some vehicles in spite of what the manual says. Is this in fact correct or are they blowing smoke? This forum has proven it can be done.

OP, you are going to get opinions here from Lexus customers, RX owners and others that may chime in -- not an official Lexus response since they are not involved or even monitor (I suspect) this forum. My view, similar to David's and others I bet, is the LPS changes should be able to be made -- at least from my own personal experience and having tried to keep up with threads here on this subject of customer and dealer-only option changes for years. I can't remember someone bringing up that there was some particular VIN or set of options in the gen 3 RX that was an exception to what LPS changes could be made -- but maybe there is and we simply have not had a report of that from someone here.

Be aware that from a warranty perspective, you may be out of luck asking for the changes to be made for free at this late date on a 2010, so be prepared to pay for the hourly service... Warranty terms state one time LPS changes need to be requested as part of the 5K/6-mo maintenance service at least here in the US, and I don't know if your Canadian version differs some way.

Beyond getting more opinions from owners and others here, I think you've got two official routes to now go. In both cases, as you've done before, be sure to give them the places where your documentation is saying it can be changed.
1) go to another dealer and try to get the changes made
2) contact Lexus Customer Assistance and see if they can perhaps help get clarity on the situation for you

Good luck.

Dave, do the doors unlock when you push the release button? The second push should open the tailgate automatically. According to the LPS, manual operation is standard but the dealer should be able to program it. Talk to the service manager. What they're telling you is not right.

Yes the doors unlock when I push the release button on the lift gate. I agree it's not right but until I had done some research I was not going to argue with them. Being new to Lexus I wasn't sure of the programmable options - now I am.

Will talk to Woodhaven this AM and if no satisfaction will talk to Lexus Canada. As I said if this should work but doesn't it should be a warranty issue as the vehicle is under warranty until Nov.

Will report back. Thanks for all the advise.

I would try another dealer then call 800-25LEXUS. The corporate has been very helpful in resolving issues I had in the past.

Only one dealer in the area. Talked to Lexus Canada this AM and they pointed me to the people I need to talk to.

Try pushing AND holding the button on the rear hatch with the FOB in your pocket. The back door is set to open after the button is held in for a few seconds. You CAN have the dealer set this to open with just pressing the button once, but since this is not a warranty issue, the dealer might want to charge for the labor time to plug in the computer and change the setting for you.

I purchased my 2010 RX350 CPO last October. I took it in for my free 6 month service last month. I asked that the dealer set the personlized setting so that the auto door opener would engage when I pushed the button on the rear door. After looking at it for a while, they told me it couldn't be done. After reading the posts here today, I called the dealer back and explained that the owner's manual says you can do it. They looked into it further, called me back and said they could do it. In fact, the service tech I spoke with just had her 2010 RX350 set to this. So it can be done. I have an appointment for next Saturday to get this done. Thanks everyone, for the good information.

dlchandler, read through this thread. It's not clear in the LPS whether it should be one long push or two short pushes to have the tailgate open automatically. Regardless, it can be done.

I just had it changed from the default push and hold to open to the push the button once and it will open.

Called Lexus Canada and they put me onto the tech person to talk to at my dealer. I called the service writer and asked him to confer with the tech. I now have an appointment next week to have it done at their expense.

Thanks for all the help

Well I took the car in yesterday. They again hooked it up and came back with the same answer. They showed me the computer screen and explained what I was looking at. The option is not there. They said this is not the first 2010 or 11 this has happened to. Guess I will have to open the lift gate old school from the back. Good thing is, it works automatic with the fob or dash button.

Thanks for all the input from the forum.

Dave
