Default My First Lexus

I just bought a 2012 RX 350 for my wife. So far, we love this car: the smoothness, comfort, and quality control, and treatment by the Lexus dealer.

About a year and a half ago, I bought a 2011 JEEP Grand Cherokee Overland model. It was the 1st year of a complere redesign for the JEEP. I must say the Lexus is head over heels over the JEEP as far as fit and finish, initial quality control. The JEEP is quite luxurious inside with all the bells and whistles, but it took about a year and many dealer visits to get al the bugs out.

As I said the Lexus is mainly my wife's car, but I am tempted to trade the JEEP and get one for myself! I have already gotten a lot of info from the forum. Thanks!

By the way, my Lexus salesman said I did not have to baby the Lexus to break in the engine, but the manual says otherwise. Any opinions on engine break-in period?

Welcome to CL and congrats on your wife's new RX.

As I remember Lexus recommends not using cruise control or maintaining high speeds for the first 1K. I drove mine home on side roads for 30+ miles to keep the speed down, LOL. They also say to avoid sudden starts or stops. It's hard to avoid sometimes. Around 5K you may see an increase in mileage. That seems to be the golden number for break-in. Otherwise it's a pretty solid engine. I wouldn't be too concerned if you don't follow all the rules.

Regarding another RX, just make sure you don't get one with more toys than she has or else you might have problems Enjoy!

Congrats on the new ride for your wife.

If it fits you well then I don't see why not. better yet get yourself an 450h.

Joseph, you have forever been changed as far as your outlook on cars. Yep, your wife is gonna keep the keys close by so you're gonna need your own. But like Anita said if you get 'more' toys than on hers she's gonna want it . Oh what the heck, buy the farm .

And welcome to the forum

i strongly discourage getting another RX.. one that is newer and shinier..
unless you're prepared to drive your wife's RX most of the time.
on a serious note.. think of how you will use the vehicle..
why did you buy the Jeep to begin with? do you do a lot of towing every now and then? how about off roading?

if the RX 350 meets your needs then by all means Go!
why not consider the hybrid.. the 450h?
or if you intend to do some heavy towing the GX 460 is another option.

The moderators of this forum have provided a very good FAQ and many of the typical questions that arise can be answered by reviewing that section of the forum. The other thing I use all the time is the online manuals in addition to the manuals hidden in the glove box.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ease-read.html

From the online 2012 RXh manuals regarding break-in:

Breaking in your new Lexus
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
● For the first 200 miles (300 km): Avoid sudden stops.
● For the first 500 miles (800 km): Do not tow a trailer.
● For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Congrats on your purchase. I'd also suggest you follow the info David cites above for the first 1000 miles. Why not take it just a bit easy on your new baby to ensure a long and trouble free life?

Congrats on the purchase!

Be careful now, Lexus is like a disease. It's not cure-able. You know what they say, once you go Lexus, you never go back. :P

Don't get another Rx. Between the two of you, you already have an SUV, so get something fun like an IS-F. One sports car and one SUV.
