30,000 mi maintenance
I called my dealership (st. Louis) to schedule an oil change for my 2010 rx 450 and was told i need a major service sine the odometer is at 30k. Cost, $660! Seems high for changing fluids and filters. Thinking about taking to either a Toyota dealer or a friend who is an experienced, certified Toyota mechanic. Is there any reason why to spend premium dollars to have service done by the dealer?

Geez, your dealer was even more expensive than mine was at a bit over $400. I wound up using a Toyota store and spent less than $170 bucks. Their service schedule even with the hybrid highlander is different so the adviser had to write 4 tickets to cover everything. Don't forget a brake fluid change is part of the deal for us. No capichino but they might have some Duncan Donuts & regular coffee for the bucks you save

If you go that route, just go online to the Lexus site when you're done and enter the dealer that did the work, what was done and the R/O number to keep all service attached to your car's serial #.

Thanks, didn't know you could do that to keep record of maintenance. The toyota dealer said they use Toyota brand 0-20w oil v. Mobi one. Is that an issue?

Remember that most of the 30,000 mile service are "inspections".
GO to your toyota service and you're looking at around $170-187 all in.

Has anyone from Metro Boston, MA area used Toyota dealership to service the latest model RX350? Would like lower cost but would prefer the dealer to know exactly what is needed at 5k, 10k, 15k, and etc,. mile services.

you as the owner of the vehicle can dictate what you want, even if they recommend something.
You might be in for a 20,000 mile service but if you only want an oil change and a tire rotation, that's all that they will do.
Pretty much the same here in California, whatever you want done, that's it.
So to answer your question, the details will be in the manual that came with your RX 350.
that's a very good guide on what's needed to be done.
YOU can opt to defer all the visual inspections to save you some dough

I was a little off in my previous memory of my costs but it's still far better than what my Lexus dealer wanted. I got them down to a little over $400 but I cut that almost in half at the Toyota shop. Now for warranty of course it's still Lexus and I also bought my tires from them.
Here's what they did:
Oil, filter, gaskets, labor etc $55.97.
Rotate tires N/C
Flush brake system including labor $118.79
Engine air filter incl labor $39.86
Key battery $5.39
Tighten all axle bolts N/C
with tax it totaled to $229.83 and they filled out and stamped the book.
The attached pdf shows exactly what the factory says to do with out the local 'fluff' package.
Here's what they did:
Oil, filter, gaskets, labor etc $55.97.

Flush brake system including labor $118.79
Engine air filter incl labor $39.86
Key battery $5.39
Tighten all axle bolts N/C
with tax it totaled to $229.83 and they filled out and stamped the book.

I was curious about the expense of service stops too!
There is also a link posted that gives you what the differant service intervails cost.
$400.00 seems steep,
I'd do the cabin air and the engine air cleaner yourself, how to do is in the owners manual and took me about 10 mins to do both !

No, I don't play soccer!
There is a nice DIY section in the owners manual covering a bunch of stuff including changing bulbs and filters. I'd definitely recommend spending a few minutes to look through it and see what you can do yourself. There are also a few threads here too.

DIY 30000 mile service supplies & cost
Completed the 20K oil change. It was very straightforward and easiest of any oil changes I've done on others cars I owned.
Went to a Toyota dealer and purchased:
Total was $68.18.
Next time I wouldn't have to buy the oil filter wrench lowering the cost < $60.
Followed the torque guidelines which rftuck stated above.
Everything is easily accessible from underneath the RX350 and there are no annoying plates to remove.
The RX350 has a clean method to drain the oil that remains in the filter housing unit. You unscrew the bottom portion of the filter (AKA the cap) prior to removing the filter housing unit. My Toyota filter replacement element kit included a small plastic piece which you insert into the filter housing after you have removed the cap. It kinda looks like a liquor bottle pouring spout. This will allow you to drain most of the oil from the filter housing unit.
Took the used oil to the local Jiffy-lube and was done start-to-finish in 1 hour.
Went to a Toyota dealer and purchased:
- Oil filter element incl. gaskets (04152-YZZA1 as noted elsewhere) $5.41
- 7 quarts of house synthetic 0-20W @ $7.21 each
- 1 drain plug washer(AKA gasket) $1.31
- house oil filter wrench (64mm x 14) $10.99
Total was $68.18.

- Wix cabin air filter #24483 (Fit perfect)
- Toyota Engine air filter 17801-0P051 (same as 2011 Toyota Siena V6-3.5L) (Fit perfect)
- Toyota Engine oil filter 04152-YZZA1 (Fit perfect)
- Toyota New oil crush washer
- Toyota syn. 0W-20
Total material cost (incl. tax): $102.30
Didn't do the brake fluid replace. Will do this when replace the brake pads.
