2012 RX350 - Help me get rid of this wood interior!!
#16
As a Luxury SUV should be
Our RX's are not cheap cars so having a modicum of fine leather and wood is what you'd expect in a car of this class. My steering wheel is wood and I love it. My ring (both hands) does not harm the wood but maybe it's the way I hold the wheel. I've never felt it was too hot to hold and the real wood feels good to me. If it was laminate I wouldn't like it at all. But we all have different taste so the choice is made (or should be) up front prior to accepting delivery. When still at the dealer it would be a fairly simple matter to exchange for the leather only wheel that is standard.
Looking at the link mklemovitc provided of the 2013 bamboo trim it looks nice. I saw something else that may also be a preview of the direction Lexus is going. Look closely at the shot of the NAV system. It appears larger with more data like radio selection on the same screen as the map. And manual A/C controls are located in the conventional way on the dash. Here is the new NAV system. Loving it. https://secure.drivers.lexus.com/lex...the-Big-Screen I wouldn't mind that setup on the Gen IV RX .

There's an article in Lexus Magazine that makes one appreciate the work that goes into putting together a Lexus wood/leather steering wheel

Before you bought the vehicle, did you have the option of building one? I have the wood too and it gets cold here in Indy but so far it's fine, it doesn't feel slippery (unless one puts lotion on thier hands like my wife) in fact, the wood has better grip than leather for me. And as far as the wood being cold, I thought the leather was colder coz I had leather wrap on our other cars.
Here in Hawaii I didn't have the option of getting the wood inlaid steerin wheel. They ONLY had it as their packages they bring in. It's a monopoly so only one Lexus dealer here and they bring in a certain package of cars. So I had to take it, trust me, I'm not stupid and wanted it and now am regretting it. The steering wheel actually was one reason I was looking into a X5 instead.
I hate the idea of putting a cheap wheel cover over because they look so obvious and cheap. The wood steering wheel is getting scuffed from my wedding band in the span of two weeks. I am going to be pissed at what it will look like in two years. Also, I hate the way it gets stuck on my palm when I let the steering wheel 'spin' back to center coming out of a turn. I have to go up and down my 5th floor parking garage everyday and that is annoying which I didn't worry about in my IS350.
I am not a DIY'er, so I might have to find a company that can wrap the wood steering wheel and cover the other trim pieces. It's just my style, as someone who is 32 I just haven't grown into the wood look yet.
Sigh

No, I don't play soccer!
Interesting because I find the opposite to be true. The leather warms up quicker than the wood in the winter. The surface is smooth except for the seams on the inside. It feels more natural to me too. And after almost two years mine looks fine. No nicks or scratches.

I absolutely love the wood steering wheels! My dad absolutely hates it. I actually showed him the sticker and pointed out that you pay for the upgrade My advice is park the car, leave the wheel straight, and just look back at how great the wood looks through the front windshield in sunlight!!

Personally, I wish the RX had as much wood in the interior as the 1st gen GX. I actually picked the light gray interior because I liked the way the wood blended in.

I think the amount of wood on the 2010 and above RX is not overly done. It's a mixture of modern and classic look. Too much wood makes it look cheap IMO. I wasn't into wood until I saw the RX's.
