Default Is Toyota cheapening their whole brand?

I started noticing this when they discontinued the good quality cabin filters last year, and started selling half-assed ones for the same price. But now they're even cutting corners on rubber floor mats!

We used to have a 2008 RX and now own a 2011 model. I bought a set of AWM for the new car and noticed a huge difference in quality. The mats are about half as thick as the old ones, and they feel very flimsy. I'm wondering if I bought the right ones...

They look like this

And here are the 2008 ones, with deep cut grooves

I could understand if they were trying to save weight for a sports car, but come on...

Odds are they chose THINNER (and more flexible) floor mats due to the "floor-mats-sticking-accelerator-pedal" recall.

None of knows what the backstory is. Because of the frenzy over the last couple of years of floormat entrapment perhaps some woman got her high heel caught in the deeper grooves, hand an accident, and sued Toyota. So they dumbed down the floormat. Who knows.

Well the deep grooves are only near the seat, so there is no chance of getting your heals stuck in there. Notice how there is a dimpled portion near the pedals. I just thought the older mats had a lot more substance to them, and there was less chance of them moving around. I'm wondering how the new ones will hold up over time, especially in the heel area.

One thing I did notice is the warning message printed on the face of the mats, telling the user to avoid stacking them. That message used to be on the back. So maybe they did make them thinner because of the whole fiasco.

I'll bet the new ones are a lot lighter, too. I gave up waiting for Lexus to start selling the winter mats for my LS again. I bought new summer mats and related the old mats for winter use.

the new ones look nice to me, design wise. The deep grooves of the old one I can see being good for snow, but for light weather and rain, the new ones should do well as well.

I would put money on them making it thinner so that they dont entrap the gas pedal

cafpaf, I don't mind if the service tech checks if the floor mat placement is ok. Most people don't pay attention to these things. I do. If it prevents any future incidents or lawsuits or recalls, and I'm not pointing the finger at Lexus, so be it.

The mats do look flimsier than before. But I wouldn't necessarily say Lexus is cheapening the whole brand with the mats or the cabin filter.
