Japanese all the way in general...Germans motors are better and the breaking system can save your life...i love lexus, but their Breaking system is nowhwre near a BMW or mercedes...not even close...germans have created breaking system to wear out even and for the cae to really really stop....I have been extremely close to crash a few times because my Rx300 breaking system stinks...and this is a car that has 170k problem free, and i wouln't traded for no BMW, but the truth is the truth...

I'm in the same boat. I went for a 2010 rx350 over the x5. I think the x5 looks better, but I love my rx350 cabin/interior. The x5 I priced was about 7k more and I couldn't wait 2-3 months for a special order to come in.

German engines are not "better". Better in what way? A significant number of enhancements to engine technology in the last two decades have been made by the japanese and simply adopted by the Germans.
Braking (note spelling) systems in a Lexus are the equal of BMW/MB in my experience. In what way are the German systems superior?
I drove European (read German cars) for years before switching to Lexus unexpectedly and have never understood this attitude towards German cars. They are not mythical, wonderful beasts. They are competent vehicles that the Manufacturers of same have somehow managed to convince people that they should pay more for less in most cases, experience lousy service and reliability and feel privileged that we are permitted to drive!

Have to disagree with you there. The RX and X5 are direct competitors traditionally. The latest X5 has undergone the usual increase in size with a new model where they also added the 3rd row. Cost can't be used as a comparison as German (any Euro for that matter) cars are always overpriced.
