Default Manual operation of rear door

I recently purchased a 2009 RX 350 and was wondering if my rear door was operating correctly. It's a power door and can be opened from inside the car as well as the key fob. It also closes automatically when using the switch on the door's underside. However, when I try to open it manually, I squeeze the handle and hear a beep but then I have to manually haul it up. I would have thought that squeezing the switch would activate the power function. Is this a defect in my car or the original design?

The switch on the lift gate can be programmed by a Lexus dealer to do either. By default, it's manual lift.

When you decide to open the tailgate manually, it's just that, you need to lift up the tailgate by hand.
From the Lexus 2005 RX330 Manual, which I assume is not different from 09 RX350 for this particular application.
As my Power Tailgate isn't functioning properly due to worn supports & I dis-activated the power feature & always manually opening & closing the tailgate, I am assuming.
Hopefully your supports aren't weakening, as I do not know if you just help the tailgate to a degree if it will open the rest of the way by itself.

It can be programmed as part of the Lexus Personalized Settings from a dealer or the use of Toyota's TechStream.

Here's a thread discussing this very topic.

I have read mixed reviews about Toyota's TechStream.applications available, viruses do not sound too appealing.
I'll stick to manual by default, good to know that's the way the tailgate functions. RedGemini
What I find strange is that Personal Settings is an option purchased according to Lexus with my VIN #, yet the consumer can't do anything with that option on their own.

From everything I've been reading, viruses are only an issue if you update the software in certain circumstances. Toyota uses TechStream at the dealers, so a virus is up to them to deal with, but I'm sure that doesn't happen with official software. Besides, I'd be using it with Windows XP I have installed in VM on my Mac, so I really don't care if it would get a virus... I can remove it and reinstall Windows if I have to...

As for the settings, it's another sham for Lexus to make more money from buyers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Suppose I could look into it since I do have an old Dell Laptop that I forgot about I can use which had the original XP program installed before it was updated. I have the product key for XP, just need to find a XP ISO download.
Demons can come out of that Laptop for all I care.
If that part works out I will also need a inexpensive Battery for the Laptop so I can use it outside in the RX.

Your manual covers this. If you don't have a copy you can find it here (back door is on page 32):
http://drivers.lexus.com/t3Portal/do...f/OM48A43U.pdf

As indicated above, power back door assist is one of the personalized settings but the default setting is manual. Info on personalized settings can be found at:
