My service advisor said the process of turning the key is purely mechanical, and not related to the electronics in the key. When my wife's key head broke and the electronics fell out, the key would still turn in the ignition but the car wouldn't start.

For the record, when our key wouldn't turn it only ever happened with one of the two keys and when it was fixed a locksmith re-pinned the new lock cylinder to the old keys.
