I just got a quote for the 90k mile service (timing belt, water pump, gaskets, seals) at $860. Does that sound abnormally high go you guys?

if lexus dealer, no.

Ive seen the Toyota dealer have some deals a bit under that at certain times of the yr.

Is the quote from a dealer? if so which one ,Toyota or Lexus? An independent shop can cut that estimate in half. Not sure what else is included in the estimate, you only listed the timing belt and a new water pump.The new water should include new coolant and a thermostat. are they changing the accessory belt? spark plugs? transmission fluid? Power steering fluid? if you have AWD are the changing the rear diff and transfer case fluids as well? What about brake fluid? How comprehensive of a 90k is it, is all I'm asking.

The bid was from a local meck-a-neck and includes the water pump, timing belt, and camshaft seals? He mentioned two seals that will need replacing at the same time and I forget which they were. Nothing else was mentioned.

I figured I'd be replacing the plugs myself using the DIY on the forum here.

its not a bad price just make sure they are a legit shop and warranty their work

It's the same price as the dealership ($50.00 difference) so I guess I'll just have the service done there. Sure hurts to part with that much dough though.

You're absolutely right Alchemist! I did download your file and take a peek, but even though I'm a decent shade-tree mechanic I don't have the tools nor the confidence to tear into such a convoluted mess of parts and get it back together properly - this is the Boss's car (wife) and if she ain't rolling when I'm done then I won't be getting any sweet lovin' for a month. The emotion is strong with this one!


Once ol' Rex (whos name according to my kids seems to be changing to Alexis - get it? A Lexus? Hahahaha!) has a few hundred k miles on him/her I might attempt it. I'm very thankful for the writeup. I know how long those suckers take to make. You've got a gift!
