08 RX350 Exhaust system loose?
Hi Everyone,
My wife inherited an 08 Rx 350 from her late father. It has a little over 130k and is in great shape. Just in the last week or so there is an audible banging noise when going over bumps.I put it on ramps and poked around underneath and found that the resonator tip was banging into the spare tire heat shield and possibly the aftermarket hitch. All of the rubber hangers are intact, though it seems like they intended to allow a lot of movement. The attached pic is a thing attached to pipe between cat and muffler. I thought it might be a mount of some sort. But it doesn't look like there's any corresponding mount hardware on frame. I also noticed that the where the tip bolts to the pipe coming from muffler it is attached with spring loaded bolts. Is it as simple as playing with those until it stops moving around?
According to my wife, it started out faint and got progressively louder in 4 or 5 days. She's screaming bloody murder and convinced something catastrophic is going to happen.
I have looked various diagrams online and everything seems ot be present. Google image is no so helpful as you mostly get pics of aftermarket exhausts.
Any advice or lead would be greatly appreciated.

The tailpipe bouncing around ans hitting something is not that unusual on cars as they age. It can happen for various reasons. One possibility is that the those rubber pipe hangers are becoming weak and worn out. Since you have found that the tip is hitting something, then I would say that the rear most hanger (part 18 in the image below, part # 17565-11160, $18.16 at dealer, $12.89 on-line) is the likely problem.
Also check that that spring loaded connection before the resonator (part 16 in the image below) has not corroded and frozen up. You should be able to flex the exhaust pipe and see it flex. If it does not flex, this is probably why the pipe hits the frame.
What you can try as a way to prove that the tip is the part making the noise is to take a shirt hanger and wrap it around the rubber hanger to immobilize it. Drive the car and see if the banging stops.
As for that thing in your photo, I don't know what it is or why it is used. My 2007 has one also.
