Default Can you change oil filter without draining all the oil?

So I went to change the oil today and was not able to get the filter off (the mechanic had put it on too tight). I normally do it myself but it was winter so i had the mechanic do it.

It was on so tight that I had to use a 24" breaker bar and ended up snapping my metal oil filter wrench in half.

This was the one: https://www.amazon.ca/toyota-Aluminu...R6SQKM9W6EYFND

So I ended up just changing the oil and ordered another oil filter wrench. Will I have to drain the oil again, or can i just change the filter? How much oil will come out?

Not the end of the world but I would suggest changing the oil again once you get the filter off. Be sure to coat the gasket with a little bit of oil, bring it to finger tight/sinch, and then turn it another 1/4 turn or so. Nothing too tight....check instruction on filter before installing. If you use a wrench to tighten, it will be very minimal.

A couple ounces come out when you just change the filter. I always remove the filter first on my oil changes, just the way I do it. I would not bother changing the oil, it is almost new.

Yes, you can change the filter without changing the oil. As nwfsnake said, only a few ounces come out.

Over the years, I've had to wrestle off different oil filters on cars and motorcycles that were put on by the gorilla a the factory, or an over zealous DIYer.

here's my 2nd to last attempt tool I use to get the filter off:

my last hope, that always works is a uber long flathead screwdriver. like 18". I only have had to use it twice, the oil filter pliers are magic, most of the time.

good luck.

I have owned one of these for the last 50 years. In all that time they have never fail to easily remove an oil filter on any car.

This x2^^^^ Once you get the filter housing off, replace the filter housing w/ a one piece Dorman housing & then just use a 3/8 ratchet to remove it...........
