Default Intermittent Cruise Control

Hi all,

This is my first question on this forum and I have used search, so please be kind!

I'm in New Zealand and have a 2004MY RX330.

The (standard) Cruise Control is somewhat intermittent, and getting worse. To explain...

Most of the time, after starting the car and pressing the CC on/off button it turns on and works OK.
Sometimes though it doesn't turn on (the light stays off) and the up/down of the lever is inactive.
Sometimes the light turns on and CC works for a while and then the lever becomes completely inactive at some random time later.
The feel of the lever operation never changes, but the button sometimes, but not always, feels wrong when it doesn't work.

I know nothing about fixing cars, but it feels to me that the lever assembly is slowly dying.
Does this sound likely?
If so, is it easy for a novice to replace and does anyone have any pictures of this area disassembled or instructions on how to do this?

Thanks,
Pete

Looking through the service manual there is a lot more to the cruise control that little lever:
Cruise control switch circuit
Stop light switch circuit
Vehicle speed sensor circuit
Park/Neutral position switch circuit
Electronic Control Module (ECM)

The first thing that needs to be done is check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Write down any DTC numbers and report back.

check the cruise control switch/actuator and the brake switch. These are common issues behind the cruise.

Thanks, but there's the next problem - I don't have any way to do this.
As the issue is intermittent I guess the fault code is only displayed when the fault exists?

The car drives perfectly so this isn't a huge issue, more of an inconvenience.

The trouble code if any would be stored. It would still be there. Here in the states many Auto Supply Stores will read trouble codes for free. Will they do that in New Zealand?
