Default 2006 rx400h towing issues

I towed a 3500 lb empty travel trailer with my lexus from Indiana to Minnesota. It was a struggle...10mpg. Had electric brake controller, weight distribution hitch/sway control. Drove many times 48mph......sometimes 55 mph but the drag was obvious.....
Very little luggage in car and 1 additional passenger in front seat so did not exceed payload of vehicle.

My Travel trailer is a hybrid coachman 19sqx 3000 lb w/o add-ons....3500 lb with add ons.

Someone told me a CVT engine - continuous variable transmission -is not good for towing. So do I need to get another vehicle and if so what? (thought I did my homework so am disappointed).
