Lightbulb Can replacing your gas cap improve fuel economy?

Hello Group I hope everyone is doing well.

Ok, I was calling around different dealers regarding 60,000 mile service. One place told me that they also replace your fuel cap as part of the service. I'm scratching my head because 1.) that's not in the service manual and 2.) what does that have to do with the maintenance of the engine? The person explained that the gasket around the fuel cap can go bad or that there maybe cracks in the cap that's not noticeable and it affects pressure in the fuel system and can have a real impact on fuel economy of the vehicle.

Never the less, I went to another place to have the service done because I thought replacing the fuel cap was a justification to jack up the price. But I've looked on line and see that ebay sell's gas caps for about $20 (shipping included). I know it's $20 but would it make a real difference or have I bought into the sales pitch?

What are your thoughts on this?

This is what they did at my 60,000 mile service:

Maintenance inspection completed
Recommended maintenance performed
Tire(s) balanced
Steering/suspension checked
Battery/charging system checked
Throttle body cleaned/serviced
Fluids checked
Battery serviced
Brakes checked
Driveshaft checked
Exhaust system checked
Wheel bearings checked
Fuel system checked
Evaporative emission system checked
Fuel filler cap gasket replaced
Cooling system checked
Tire condition and pressure checked
Transmission fluid/oil leak checked
Body lubricated
Wiper(s) replaced
Cabin air filter replaced/cleaned
Air filter replaced
Brake fluid flushed/changed
Differential fluid flushed/changed
Antifreeze/coolant flushed/changed
Drive belt(s) replaced
Oil and filter changed
PCV valve/filter replaced
Transmission fluid changed

They replaced the fuel filler cap gasket but not the fuel cap. I didn't know it was such a big deal.

I think they replaced the gas cap becaused of the seal....if it's not sealed properly you will get a CEL for that...

I would ONLY replace it only it it give me the CEL. Why waste the $20 for something you don't need?

BTW, I used to believe every sticker add 5 hp to my Honda Civic .

Just a data pt for those in NE Ohio:

E-Check will replace at no charge a failed gas cap during biennial inspection. Dunno if it'll have the Toyota "leash", though.

I took a quick look last time I filled the tank and I do not see any serviceable parts for the gas cap for my RX330. Not sure what this o-ring is and cannot find anything on the Sewell web site. It may exist, however, I do not see it at the moment.

Wouldn't increase fuel economy but if your cap isn't sealing properly then it would make a difference to replace it. If it is sealing properly then it won't make a difference to replace it.
