Default Huge RX 330 75,000 mile maintenance bill!

I took our 2004 RX 330 in for its 75,000 mile service on Friday and was presented with a rather shocking $7,000+ list of items to repair. The big ones are "replace control arm bushings" (worn/torn) at $2,561.98, the replacement of the steering rack assembly at $1,406.68, and also replacing the drive belts at $879.75 which are in poor condition.

My question is are these the sorts of charges and expenses I should be expecting at 75,000 miles for an RX 330 that has only been driven by my wife since we bought it new? This is our second RX and always kind of assumed they were pretty bullet-proof.

We originally thought of running the car past 100,000 miles but if our RX330 is going to start getting this expensive to maintain I am starting to think about what else I could to with $7,000. Are these charges reasonable?

Seems high to me. Take it to an independent shop for a second opinion. Have them confirm that the items on the list of repair really need to be done.

I just replaced control arms and it was a long process. However, not $2,500 worth. The parts are $100 and maybe 5-6 hours labor if you find a shop that can cheat em out. Read post on em.

I had one for my RX300 that got into the 3K range back in Dec. 2004 and that's the last time my Lexus saw the inside of a dealer.

Thanks for the input so far. Yes just to confirm, the quote came from a Lexus Dealer (Lexus of Concord in California) who has always serviced our RX330. The SA is someone I have never dealt with before and I am feeling a bit taken advantage of. The cost is probably more than half of what the car is actually worth and putting me off this dealer when I replace it.

I have never used an independent repair shop before, but there again I have never intended to run a car to high mileage before. Seems getting a second quote is prudent.

Steering rack seems right on par with other dealers, but dont think you need to change it immediately. Drive belts are easy.

I don't understand how the bushings ca be 2500. The parts alone aren't more than 500 if you went all OEM. Labor rates are 90-110/hr so even this job at 10 hours, which it is probably realistically 6 hours for them is still only 1100 on the high side, so $1600 total. I've had reputable shops quote me 8-900 for the control arms so you should be able to find similar.

How handy are you?

If you do not know a quality independent shop you might try your local Toyota shop. Would not show any paperwork from the quote Lexus provided to you. Rather, would ask for an inspection as if you were thinking about going on a trip. Will cost a few dollars, however, you will see what they think is truly wrong.

As for those problem areas noted by your Lexus dealership -- have you noticed any oil spots in your driveway or garage?

Perhaps someone here at CL might have a recommendation for an independent shop in the area of Lexus of Concord.

What makes up the other $2,000 in repairs? You only have about $5,000 listed. Don't get ripped off!!!!

Thanks! No spots or any signs of oil seepage in my driveway. I am completely un-handy when it comes to automotive mechanics so very much in the hands of what dealers tell me. (And quote) All your reseponses are very helpful!

Just because it is a Lexus shop doesn't mean they won't try to raid your bank account.

Some smaller items. For example $193.19 in replacement hood shocks. $149.95 to perform an alignment because of the worn control arm bushings and power steering fluid leak. A thermostat housing and O-Ring (Found coolant seep) replacement which is $55.37 for the part and over $700 labor to do it Even smaller items like $21.54 to replace windshield wiper inserts. More items like that outside the big items I listed. It all adds up!

This car has been regularly serviced and driven gently by my Wife all its life. I do not want to create an impression that this is a car that has been abused, hence my shock when presented with the bill!

Dealers: I usually take mine to either Serramonte or Oakland for service.

I also know a couple places for independent mechanics but they are in Pacifica/Millbrae....

I agree with others, either try your local Toyota dealer (ours is very reasonable on my 4Runner), or find a reputable independent mechanic.

I'm in the process of selling mine and the mechanic checking my car noticed a leak from the rack. I see there's a service bulletin that give them a repair procedure. Does anybody know about LSB-0107-12? I guess it's like our radiator leaks. If you don't complain loud enough, nothing gets done.
