Default 04 RX 330 Paint flaking off the rear bumper

Just Purchased 04 RX 330 109,000 miles. All is Great except that I am having delamination / flaking / peeling off, of the paint on the rear bumper ..
It is massive and spoils the look of a "perfect " auto . ( a 12" x 12" area at the corner of the rear bumper..)
is this a normal flaw or is the sign of something else?
will repainting last ? or should i just trade?

Thanx !

I'd repaint if the car is in good condition otherwise. What color, Bamboo Pearl?

is not not possible that the previous owner (if there is one) got the bumper repaired/repainted at some point?? perhaps it was repainted by a less than qualified person.

Sounds like it has been repainted by someone that thought they knew what they were doing.
A few hundred bucks should get it looking new.

when the plastic bumpers are repainted during a repair they have to be treated with a special primer so the paint will bond, many body shops skip this step and you get the peeling that is happening on your bumper. the cost of that paint alone is $140. per pint and the bumper will have to be taken off, sanded and painted so it will be more than a few hundred bucks to be done correctly, however they can be made to look like new. the last time i had it done in seattle at a friends shop it was $700

I have fallen in love with this car .... so I am now looking for a body shop to correct the problem.Unfortunately this may be an expensive lesson.

I was thinking $200 tops for lifetime warranty.

To spray the entire bumper, as it would be nearly impossible to blend, I think $200 is a bit delusional. The paint is a three step process. Base color, pearl coat then clear coat with several layers for each if done proper. Plus, you need to add sanding and prep.

Call your local Toyota/Lexus dealership and ask for a body shop recommendation. Perhaps they even have their own. That would be a good starting point. Then, you can try other shops for a comparison on pricing, time the job will take (as you will be without your RX), etc.

While you can get quotes now, I would wait until Spring to get the work done. No snow and rock/salt along with the warmer weather will help the paint cure better.

+1

Winter in the midwest is not the best time to have paintwork done for a couple reasons. Not the least of which is that there are a lot more fender benders in the winter and the shop will be busy. Therefore prices may be higher and workmanship may suffer. Secondly, the paint will need up to 90 days to fully cure and during that time you can't apply wax or a sealant. I'd wait till May or June if it were my vehicle.

Keep in mind that the bumpers are really vinyl covers and are flexible. The paints used need to have extra flex agents added to allow them to not crack and flake off if they bump something lightly. I'd have this done by a reputable shop that has experience painting bumpers.

I had my new rear bumper cover painted for 3.6 labor hours at $45/hour and the paint materials cost $115.20. This included the flex agent. It looked perfect and was guaranteed for life. Was still perfect when I traded it 2 years later.

This was for the entire bumper for $277.20.

Just be sure to get several quotes.

That is about where I thought the price might come in at. Did it include a new step pad as see here?

If they are doing a complete job then this should be taken off and replaced and not taped off and painted around.

Also, you never did say what color your RX was. We here at Club Lexus are curious to know if continues a problem with the Bamboo Pearl paint.
