Update on motor oil for my RX
Hi everyone, as you know Toyota/Lexus back specked our vehicles to be able to use 5W-20, and supposedly even 0W-20 motor oil. Here is what i discovered; Back in April of 2012 I tried Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20, and it seemed to perform very well on it and even gaining some fuel millage. However, the valve train was nosier, and it had a strange clunk in the drive train while coasting and then hitting the gas again. So I drained it out and went with the Mobil-1 5W-30 for a while, I liked the mb-1, however I didnt like the way the motor ran cold (seemed doggy to me) more that usual when cold. Then it came time for an oil change and I decided to try Pennzoil Conventional 5W-20 or (PYB). I must say I am very impressed with this oil. It has more throttle response, better cold engine drive ability, and the motor just seems to be happier on it. No clunks in the drive train, no odd valve train noises, so far so good. I will keep you all posted. I had discovered a while ago these motors do not like a heavier oil, and now I am convinced of it for sure.

FYI, royal purples 5W30 has the fuel mileage of 5W20. i have ran conventional 5W30 castrol since i bought it 4 years ago (mine is a 2004) and switched to royal purple about 2 months ago, so far so good. its the dead of winter here in northern canada, so i dont expect to see any real gains in mileage til the summer.

kknguyen11; reason i dont is because the engine was designed for a specific oil(granted toyota/lexus has changed there mind, which i dont undertand how that can be) i have 190,000 km on mine, and i am afraid if i go too thin i might start burning oil. my garage is heated to 10 degrees celsius, and i use a block heater at work when the temp is -20 celsius or colder, so im really not worried with 5w30, going down 5 in the first number prob wont make that much difference anyway.
lexus114; like i said, i switched over to RP about 2 months ago, after reading the bottle was when i realized that it has the fuel mileage of a 5w20. not sure when the change over happened. main reason i went with RP was it is one of the few oil companies who use a full synthetic, no blend, no gimmicks, just engineered oil.

I'm running 0W-20 in my 1MZ-FE also backspec'd for a 20 weight. No strange noises, still purrs like a kitten and smooth like always. A bit better throttle response it seems, but who knows! lol, I'll probably be going back to PP 5W-30 on my next OCI.
