2RX Oil Line Failure - Catastrophic Consequences (pictures)
#181
still waiting for an answer on whether anyone in the USA was able to get this proactively replaced by their Lexus dealership, or if they were reimbursed after the fact.
I would like to stop worrying about part on my car but don't want to shell out the cash since there's an open recall for it.

pin hole
I'm truenorth and I started this thread. The rubber hose part in the picture failed, and there's no evidence of this if you hold the part in your hand and look carefully at it. I showed my mechanic and he said that the smallest pinhole will deform open, spray your oil everywhere and then close up to be invisible again.
The smallest pinhole is all that's needed.

I read this thread and was worried about my 2007 RX350 with 97,000 miles on it.
I called Bell Lexus in Scottsdale, and they indicated that only the all wheel drive cars have the oil cooler line. I checked the front of my engine, and sure enough there is nothing where the oil cooler line would be.
So I think I'm in the clear.

I finally got mine changed. I just wanted it replaced and have peace of mind. Both the VVTI and Oil Cooler have been changed. Now just to fix the power steering in the future.

I bought the part myself and had a mechanic put it on. I waited til I needed an oil change to do it. It took about an hour, but we did it slow and took the time to clean some stuff off too. I spent about 150 on the part which I picked yo from Toyota, along with 2 gaskets for both ends. As for reimbursement, lexus wanted me to bring it in and honestly I felt like it would cost a lot which is why I got an independent to do it. I might call them up and see what they say about it, but I don't have the reciept for the part anymore and the work was not done by Lexus.

My mistake on this thread....... 2008 mfg date Model Year 2009
The date to be concerned about for the vvt-i oil line to the upper portion of the valve train with a rubber hose is April, 2008 NOT 2009. Your vehicle manufacture date is on the back side of your driver's side door. They originally called it oil cooler hose ....... but they were wrong. It was the oil supply line to the upper portion of the valve train. This affects all model years 2007 & 2008.
The bad transmission "oil cooler" hose for RX350 owners with trailer tow package affects model years 2007 through 2011. Good luck to those who have both problems.

This is incorrect. I have heard a lot about only if you have AWD or a towing package etc. I have AWD but no trailer hitch on my car. Either it was removed or never had it before. I urge everyone to check up on this physically. Open the hood and look down between the radiator and the front of the engine.

2008 rx 350 oil hose problem
Ok, so this weekend my daughter was in our 2008 rx 350 with 98000 miles on it. She was driving and all of a sudden a few warning lights came on and the the car shut down. The oil was completely empty and our first thought was the shop forgot to put the drain plug in or the oil pan got punctured with road debris. Now it appears this may be the oil hose. I found this thread and it looks like this is an all too common problem with the 2008 RX 350. I never received a recall notice and pulled up the vin and it still does not show a recall notice. Were all the 2008 RX 350 using this same part?
Of course, this happened in the middle of nowhere and on the 4th of July weekend to boot. I will start making some calls on Tuesday and see what the dealership tells me. I am concerned that the engine may be blown. What can I expect from Lexus in regards to repairs, towing, etc? Will this be covered or will they expect me to pay a large portion of the costs? Debating on bringing it back to Park Place Lexus in Grapevine, TX or trying to locate a dealer in Waco (closer to where the car is located).
Thanks for any help you can offer,

In doing more research it appears this was replaced in 2011 at 47000 miles by a Lexus dealership before we purchased the car. I don't know what they used to replace it with and if the new part has a lifetime warranty, etc.

Hope the engine is okay. Looks like they replaced with a rubber hose in 2011 and hence it cracked. This time try to get an all metal one. Also, check the oil cooler hose and get a metal replacement if not already done. All the best.

Well, it looks like the 2011 replacement part was still rubber and also failed. The new part was installed but it looks like I have engine problems so I will be taking to Lexus next week and hope they take care of this. Really disappointed that this was replaced once and still failed.

Just had this oil catastrophe on my 2009 RX 350 at 112K miles. Thank goodness it happened while I was still in town and not while I was driving out to CA for the 4th of July. Had it towed to Lexus of Chandler and it was definitely the rubber oil line so it was all covered under the extended warranty/service bulletin. Love this forum!
