Default Frequency of oil change with 2009 RX 350

I recently purchased a 2009 RX350 and was wondering if there was any indicator light for when you do the oil change. I saw that there's some oil indicator light on the dash, but I'm under the impression that it's for an actual more critical problem, not to tell you when to do a routine change. I was curious because some of my friends have something in the car that just tells them when to do an oil change, which often allows them to run for well over the 5000 (or however many miles) recommended. Secondly, if I do follow a recommended mileage, which would it be? Here in Canada I think I was recommended 5000km, but I've seen some people say that they do 5000 miles, which is 8000km.

You can check the manual - which is available on-line - but, if memory serves, it is 6,000 miles (app. 10'000 kms) between oil changes. Yes, there is an indicator, which the service people re-set whenever they change the oil (and there is also a 'check engine' indicator, a different one than the oil change service indicator). I use synthetic oil and, even though Toyota/Lexus on their newer models go 10,000 miles (i.e. app. 16'000kms) between changes when the recommended synthetic oil is used, my Lexus dealer says that the warranty requires 6,000 miles oil changes whatever the oil. Good luck - you'll enjoy the car!

Thanks! One least thing, is it important to get the oil change done at a Lexus dealer? Or can that be done at any trustworthy garage? Bear in mind warranty is not really an issue here, the car has 110k on it already.

The maintenance required light comes on every 5,000 miles to remind you to change the oil, which is what the manual specifies.

this topic is beat to death on a monthly basis. with that said, the single best and MOST objective way to assess when to change oil is to send a sample of oil after a 5000 mile oil change to Blackstone labs. if it is good, they will recommend you going 6000 or 7000 next oil change. Then do the same with another sample.

I have done this and we take our RX330 to 6500 miles before a change. I use toyota filter and 5w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic.

By just asking around or doing a poll, you will get ranges from 3000 to 15000 miles guaranteed.

Only if it's important to you to use a Lexus dealer. It's the same as it is for any car. No manufacturer can require you to use the dealer even to retain warranty coverage.

^ This. Though Blackstone isn't the only lab out there.
