Gas mileage on a 2012 Camry LE
We recently took a trip and checked the gas mileage carefully. The mileage indicator on the dash showed 27.3 - we were disappointed, but the actual mileage on fill-up was just over 30. We had a pretty good headwind. The next tank dash indicator showed 29.2, but the actual mileage was better - still into a headwind. Return mileage indicator showed 31, but actual was 35, and the final tank showed 33, but the actual was 38. The last two readings were with a quartering tailwind and a direct tailwind. I don't understand why the dash mpg indicator is so far off, but I won't pay much attention to it now.
PS These mileage figures were while driving a steady 75 with the air conditioner on,

I don't know why it is so far off, but there is definitely room for error in any trip computer mpg calculator. With that said, I have heard many people say that the trip computer mpg average is often 2-3 mpg worse than actual gas mileage with the new camry. I guess better under than over.
But yes, it is definitely possible to get an average of 40 mpg on the highway if you drive carefully enough. The last time I took a 12 camry on a long trip, I averaged (actual mileage, not trip computer) between 33 (mashing the gas) to 38 mpg (driving normally going 75 without much wind either way) on the highway.
You might want to post this question on toyotanation.com and see if anyone over there has an answer to why the trip computer is so off.
