Default Tank Capacity - What is Actual?

19.2 Gallons is advertised as the tank capacity.

Is 19.2 gallons the amount of gas required to fill an empty tank to the top of the filler pipe (about impossible) or the amount of gas it holds when the average nozzel cuts off flow?

This is important for me to know because I need to calibrate an aftermarket computer that plugs into the OBDII port. It needs to know this parameter so it can calculate distance to empty. Obviously it is important to be consistent at fill ups so the tank is filled to the same point each time.

I realize the Nav system calculates miles to empty. However, gallons to empty is a much more useful parameter to know. I sure do miss the days when it was possible to truly top off a tank and always know exactly how much gas is remaining. I am thinking about intentionally running the car until the first miss from running out of gas is felt and then fill up to see exactly how much gas it takes.

19.2 gallons is the system capacity. Even when running down to single digits on the DTE, I have never put in 17 gallons that I can remember.

Thanks for the response.

What does "System Capacity" mean?

I would really like to determine the maximum amount of usable gasoline if the tank is filled to the auto cutoff of the fuel nozzle. By considering a few % error for the variability in fuel nozzles, I can then very accurately know exactly how much usable gasoline is left. It amazes me that something this basic does not seem to be common knowledge.

Includes the fuel lines, etc. BTW, probably not a great idea to run the system down to fumes on a regular basis.

As for why this is not common knowledge, there is little reason to know to the ounce how much fuel is left. Most of us are quite happy to know how much is left by the gas gauge and trip computer. You get near a 1/4 tank you fill up.

Yes especially since the Gas cools the fuel pump, you dont want it to get hot and cause a premature failure....

I've run my tank down to 0 miles cruising range(as stated by my nav system) on my 2007 RX 350. Filled up to full tank and it was only 16.5 gallons fillup until it was full.
