Default Rear Brake pins

08 Rx400h
I need a sanity check on the rear brake slider pins..rubber one goes on top or bottom?

Generally I know they go on the bottom. Some diagrams I see show top and some on the bottom. i know some vechicle like to be special and has them at the top. I replaced my rear calipers with aftermarket brand "A-Premium" and it came with the rubber tip on the top. I generally like to go OE or OE brand but I could not resist the price on amazon $90 for the pair with no core charge. Alternative was trying to replace after market pins/ rubber gaskets for $40

Another side question what is the lastest grease to use.. I hear it is the silicone based ones (Permatex 24129 ) or the toyota lithium soap grease (08887-01206). I previously used this synthetic (CRC 05353) and not sure if it is source of my problems. Did brakes 1 year ago, uneven brake pad wear. One boot is starting to rip.

The backing plate has rusted off... deciding if its worth the cost and effort to replace. never took the hub out before.

I use Sil-Glyde on brakes (pins and pads). Works great, cheap and readily available. Many other uses, also (chassis gaskets/seals, etc).

IDK about the rubber question - didn’t track that.

I'd have to check the grease.
I do know RockAuto sells caliper rebuild kits.
I rebuilt all four of mine for around 20 to 40. Can't really remember.
Just make sure you get the piston boots and the slide pin rubber.
If you still have the originals, I'd go ahead and do it.

My dust shields rusted off, I just cut them the rest of the way off.
I also painted my calipers and rotors (not the braking plate obviously) to prevent rust.
Took a couple days, but I was over doing the job.
I personally wouldn't trust anything off of amazon.

I’ve had them off my car for over a year now with no noticeable difference. Old ones swelled up and broke. Granted I have the bigger 2010-2015 rear calipers on mine but in principle the system is nearly identical.

Re: which pin had the rubber thing? I would checkout a few youtube videos on brake caliper lubrication on our vehicles. Sometimes the videos disagree unfortunately; I chose based on the majority...

I did mine last year but I can't remember, otherwise I'd tell you. In fact one side's pins both rusted and I had to get another set of pins and rubber boots.

I believe the shop manual shows you where the rubber grommet goes.
If you don't have one, I can dig it up.
I have it on cd rom

Looks like the BOTTOM pin has the rubber for all 04-09 RX (Torqued to 32 ft lbs)

If anyone reading has the upgraded 3rd gen Highlander / RX rear calipers, the TOP pin is the one with the boot

If anyone reading has the upgraded 2nd gen Highlander rear calipers, the BOTTOM pin is the one with the boot

Appreciate the answers. Matt you confirmed that it wasn't me seeing manuals showing at both sides.
