Hi,

Anyone know where I can get a replacement part online for the melted rubber?
Thanks.

I believe this is the replacement part

84840

Search for that number and expand the results till you can find your year.

Here is mine:

84840G 8484021010
SWITCH ASSEMBLY, BACK DOOR OPENER 01 In Stock $78.94 $65.65

I just wrapped the melted boot in 3" wide strip of electrical tape, and screwed it back in place. Im going to test this first. It was very gooey like black tar. It was hard to get off my hands. I had to use Lava pumus soap. If my Lexus dealership was not so far from me, I would personally tell them how ridiculous this is.

Thanks for the reply.
I have resorted to use the remote on the key only to open/close trunk for now.
I think I will try your solution with the Black Electrical Tape before ordering the replacement part, I have read other post you need to take apart the whole door panel to replace the rubber part. that is really scaring me off.

Default Melted rubber cover on rear hatch

My 08' RX 350 has this problem.
Vehicle is out of warranty and service writter said "that's life!"
Part from dealer is $79.00. Parts dept said they only have 1 in stock---because they're required to have at least "one of every part" available. (not much demand)

After reading the previous conversations here at Club Lexus, I contacted the service manager at Sewell Lexus Dallas, TX. Since I'm a good customer--no problem!

Awesome dealership, awesome vehicle and great forum!

Thanks for those who've contributed!

This has now happened to my Lexus RX 350.. Dealer quoted me 114.00 for the part and 200.00 for the labor. My new front brakes cost less than that at the dealer. I have contacted Lexus, we shall see what their response will be. . We live in Texas and I know we get hotter than FL.

It happend to my 2007 rx400h also and I live in atlanta. My vehicle has always been kept in garage when parked. It is not the weather, it is an electrical issue. There was a recent recall on Toyota door with melted component. I will check into it.

This sounds like it is something the NHTSA might want to hear about in light of the recent Honda and Toyota fire hazards and recalls due problem switches starting fires. I'd encourage all who have had this issue to file a report.

You can file on-line here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

I filed a safety complaint to safercar.gov and got a confirmation below:
Your Confirmation Number (ODI Number) is: 10480016

I will go to my dealer but hope that other people will register and not just silently replacing the part.

Yeah, it's not an easy DIY job. I have already looked at it when I was replacing my rear backup lights with LEDs

This has happened to my car as well! 2007 RX 350. I live in TX.

Any idea on how to get the dealership to pay for it?

Tulsa OK, 2007 RX 350, happens here. I epoxied a piece of
flexible tile 1/8 in thick, from arts and crafts store.
Guess I'll know next summer if it worked. I was quoted
$249 while having new tires put on.

Just FYI, I have an 08 Sienna and the same piece is somewhat melted. The Toyota service department (from my warranty card) told me that since I couldn't replace the black rubber without replacing the switch, then the whole assembly should be covered because the switch is covered under warranty.

The reason why I'm posting it here is because I have an RX 350 as well. Both Sienna and RX 350 share the same first 5 digits of the part number. It may worth a phone call if you're still under warranty.

We are taking ours (we live in GA) to a dealership in Jacksonville, FL next week. I am hopeful they will not charge us for replacing this sticky gooey latch.

@ the Toyota dealership now; they are going to take care of Sienna liftgate rubber under warranty. Might want to check if you're under warranty.
