As you may know, the cross sections are adjustable and there is a screw that prevents them from sliding off. We took mine off in one piece and removed the cross sections later when I broke it down for storage.
I simply can't remember if the cross can be removed while the rack is still on the car, it wouldn't take much to try. The restraining screw is just a black hex head screwed into the frame of the rack.
