I don't know what year you're referring to but I can relate some experience that I've had with my 2009 RX350. The black window moldings (on the '09doors) appear to be all plastics of one type or another with the vertical ones being fairly thick molded items. What might not be obvious as you look at it is that the upper part of the door frame is also wrapped with what Lexus refers to as "black-out tape." It's a thin black plastic tape that's cut in the shape of the upper window frame on the doors, both front and rear. It's pressed in place and has the appearance and feel of a painted surface. It is only a few mils thick. (!) On my car the I believe that the detail shop at the dealership used a buffer on those upper window frames and wore one down to bare metal at am edge. Another had a visible crease and appeared to have been overheated possibly by buffer action (swirl marks visible).

At first the SAs told me it was integral to the door frame and it would have to be painted but I found an IPB online that showed the tape and part number. Somewhat surprised, they took it to their body shop and had the tapes replaced. They didn't charge me for anything but if I were to buy them, the parts themselves were about $30/door. I have no idea how difficult they are to install but it has to be cheaper than painting. What this tells me is that it's probably not difficult to mess up those tapes so if you were to use any compounds on them I would do it by hand and go very lightly. I would probably take the same approach with the vertical pieces even though they're thicker.

shikbas, try a little Klasse AIO. It might make the scratches less noticeable. I have the black window molding around the windows too on my 450h. I used Klasse on them and my visors and they looked better. Good luck.

Klasse AIO, is this like a buffing compound?
