Default Is this normal: knock/click feel on the steering wheel when starting the engine?

Hi,

I have a 2008 RX350. Recently I noticed that when I start the engine while the steering column is still extending to its full position, I could feel a momentary knock on the steering wheel. I don't recall feeling this when the car was new. If I put the key in (but not starting the engine) and just let the steering column to extend to the final position, and then start the engine, there is NO knock.

I showed the Lexus dealer service person this the other day and he insisted that it was normal. But I really don't recall having this issue in the past.

Can anyone let me know if your RX does the same? My warranty period is going to expire in a month and I want to make sure this is resolved if it indeed is abnormal.

When the key moves to start position, the power to steering motor is interrupted.

imho: you are moving the key to start too quick. One should wait and examine all warning lights come-on (self test) when the key is in run position.

Thanks. Good to know. On the other hand, I never know that I have to wait after putting the key in though.

No, you dont have to ,,, but it is good practice to check gauges and warning lights.

Few more:
Once the engine catches, I buckle up and ensure every one is buckled up. This gives enough time to fluids to circulate. Put the vehicle in 'R' (99.9% of time). Back up and apply brakes to come to a complete halt (you just tested the brakes as well). Look at the floor where the vehicle was parked for leaks etc.
Drive and keep the rpms below 3K till the coolant temp comes to the normal operating temp.

All simple steps and if you do it for a week, will become a habit.
