Default Brake Pad and Disc Change

Hi All,

The dealer just replaced front brake and disc on our RX330 '04 today. They charged us $98 for pads kit, $165 each on brake disc, and $251 labor. Does that sound about right? A year and half ago, at another dealer, we were charged $65 for pads kit and $221 labor. I read that brake disc needs to be changed after 3 pad changes. So that makes sense. However the parts price seems a little high. Can anyone tell me if the price I paid is about right? Thank you. BTW, the RX330 has 133k miles. And the service was done in Inland Empire Socal.

Looks like they charged you a 50% markup on parts, at a minimum, over what you might pay if you purchased them yourself.

Cannot say regarding the labor charge.

Here is what Iron Toad has to say regarding pricing:

Personally, have found the local Toyota dealership with better service and much better pricing than the Lexus dealerships in the area. However, I do some work on my own car as well -- brake pads being one of those.

Thanks for the info Rx330inFL. I'll definitely need to double check their pricing before agreeing to the repair.

Brake discs have to be replaced when the minimum thickness is reached. Regardless of many times they have been re-surfaced.

The dealers I mentioned are Crown Lexus (with 50% markup on parts). I'll be going to Longo Lexus or one of the Toyota dealers for major repairs in the future.

Just called Crown for parts only price, they charges 85 for pads kit and 151 for brake disc. About a 10% markup on their repair compare to if you buy parts and install it yourself. However comparing to buying parts in other places, the price is still about 50% higher. Longo charges about $10 less on each part and charges $610 total for repair instead of the $680 at Crown.

BTW, the day of service at Crown Lexus started off with sloppy and impatient attitude from both their attendant and consultant. Asking a question was replied with impatient answer, as if I had asked too many already. Attendant was slow to help us while no one was waiting at the service entrance. It was definitely one of the worst service experience we have had at a Lexus dealer service center.

Welcome to my world. Once got into an argument over why the Lexus dealer did not do a five (5) tire rotation on my RX instead of the four (4) tire rotation I received. I wanted the spare tire to be part of the rotation. Was told they did not do that. When I pointed it out in the manual as an option I was told the manual was incorrect. After that I only took my car to the dealership for warranty work.

Please note that I do know there are some really good Lexus dealerships out there for both sales and service. I just do not like those in my area. Enough that I would not purchase another Lexus should the opportunity present itself. I am, however, quite happy with the local Toyota dealership I deal with from time-to-time. They couldn't be nicer and are always happy to answer questions.

I have no experience buying Lexus parts online so I'm curious as to the quality of parts supplied by Iron Toad; specifically I'm looking at buying the set of four mudgards...

Thanks

Lexus wanted to charge me $1500 to replace the two rear shocks, NOT the springs and both front rotors and pads that seem to be on the way out. They were very nice and courteous but times are very tough for me now so if I gotta spend that kind of dough I gotta make it work for me. So I went online and purchased all 4 rotors and brake pads and all 4 shocks/springs for about the same money. EBC/KYB/Eibach. Will be putting them in myself with my buddy's help soon.
