Default Navigation DVD upgrade, is it worth it?

Hello,

I've been owning 2006 Lexus RX 400h for a year (bought it used) now. Since the navigation software seems little outdated, I'm thinking of upgrading to newer version but would it worth paying $200 for the latest one? or should I search at ebay for little outdated ones for cheaper price? I still can't justify spending $$$ on updates though..

psp104, welcome to CL.

I didn't update the nav on my '04 in the six years I had it. I felt the cost was prohibitive at $300 each. And changes/additions weren't always there.

The last update came out last October. At least the cost is much better now. I think you can get it from Sewell, CL vendor, for $150 with old disk trade-in. It will probably change the look of the screen. I would have gotten it at that price if I still had the '04.

You have to judge for yourself as to the value. I drive out of town a lot, and buy an upgrade every 3 or 4 years. I have friends with a NAV in a 2000 car running the original disc.
In any event, avoid "used" disc and avoid copies at all costs. When you do buy, search here for dealers (Seawell, e.g.) that give members a discount.

In the latest upgrade (9.1?) can you still do this "Over Ride" trick to be able to use the menus while the car is moving?

On my current system (2006) it is menu - volume, then touch bottom left, top left, bottom left, top left and then you can press and hold the over ride button. It resets after each time you start the vehicle.

I would not upgrade if I lose this functionality....so is there something equivalent in the new version??

Thanks!

Should be able to do it for $150, maybe even a little less. One guy I know bought it for $120 & did the install himself. Dealer wanted $300.

Adambomb6,

Yes you can still do the Ver 5.1/9.1 just like the Ver 5.1/6.1 back in 2007. I did it and it works great.

Go here to see comments on how I did it.

Well, what I was asking is did they disable the over ride method, and judging from your post I guess they did.

No, the finger dance to unlock the navi while in motion on the touch screen no longer works after dvd v 6. You either have to burn a hybrid homemade dvd or buy an after market kit to get the unlock feature.
