Brown Stuff on Side of Car
I have noticed this brown stuff that has run/dripped from near the front of the gas tank filler area. I can not tell if it started from the gas tank opening because the actual first spot is below and slightly ahead of the gas filler area. You can tell that it once was more "liquid" because of the drip. It has dried to a hard film now.
I have tried to wax it off, bug&tar it off, heavy cut cleaner it off but it still stays on the paint. It is thin enough that I do not feel it when I run my finger over it. I am not sure if the paint has been etched by the brown stuff or not.
Any ideas of what to try next? I have had gas spillage on other cars but never as tough as this stuff to remove. I don't think this is gas related but it is near the gas filler area.
All thoughts and suggestions would be great to hear.

Try some Mequire's Scratch X on it. Hand rub it in starting in the center of the stain and work outward pushing the Scratch X outward then buff with a microfiber towel. You may have to repeat this 4 or 5 times but that should do the trick. The Scratch X will not hurt the clear coat or paint.

Is it possible that you overfill your gas tank or that some drips out during refueling? I have seen tell-tale streaks on my old Mercedes diesel from where the fuel runs down the side and then becomes a magnet for the other garbage. It takes a bit of work to get it off, such as Simple Green, followed by Bug and Tar remover and then Polish (not wax) followed by wax. Recognizing that Polish has some abrasive element in it, I use it prior to waxing when I get a stain.

When I used the heavy cut cleaner I thought if that did not work then Scratch-X would not work.
I will try multiple passes with Simple Green, Bug & Tar Remover, Scratch-X, and then a good wax once the stain is gone (wishful thinking).
It might be overflow of gas but I have never seen something like this so persistent and diffucult to remove. I guess something could have mixed in with the gas and "harden" to this Brown Stuff.
Thanks for the feedback. I am out of town so an upload of a picture will not happen anytime soon.

I still say we need a pic. I've never seen mold attach itself to auto paint. Carpet yes, paint on a car, no. Mold needs dark and damp to grow, and a car body is pretty much the opposite. Might look like mold, but I'm betting it isn't.

Thanks for all the feedback both real and funny. I have it down to a thin stain now. I will continue to work it with polish until I get it all removed. It does look like it stained the clear coat.
