Whether it was a gift or not you still have to consider the cost of ownership (insurance, maintenance, repairs, etc). While I'd love a $300K supercar as a gift I'd probably have to turn it down considering that the costs I mentioned would be impossible for me to handle.

With 25 k budget back in March, I told my wife she could either get a new vehicle like a RAV4 or a used 09 RX350. We couldn't even afford a new Highlander with my budget. She was concerned about the premium gas penalty on RX 350 until I explained the math to her, similar to what GatorMike had done. With her commute the difference would be $300 instead of $225. I figure I could save $300 elsewhere.

Yeah. To me, $25k is a good budget for a used car in today's market. We picked up an 09 RX 350 with 20k miles 7 months ago. When we made the purchase she wasn't too happy about it. However, she really enjoys driving the vehicle now and doesn't regret the decision that I made for her anymore.

I own a 06 and an 08 and use 87 octane with no problems. With the 09 , 10 have they changed anything in the engine or is it the same engine requiring a higher octane

The 2010 has this to say:
There was a recent change made to the RX350 which now has it listed once again as needing only 87 octane at least starting with the 2012 model year. The RX450h still requires 91 octane.

BTW, the '08 RX350 has always been stated as needing 91 octane or better. Of course, this is different than what you can get away with using. The 2nd Generation RX350 has reduced performance and MPG with the lower octane fuel.

I ran both regular gas and premium gas in the 2nd gen rx350 and can't say I feel any difference. With regular gas and moderate hwy speed (not cruise control) I was able to see 28mpg on short hwy segments. The overall tank avg was about 20-21mpg.
Same thing with the premium fuel...I would actually say the car drinks more premium fuel by 1-2mpg.
I only ended up using premium just because I am not 100% informed on long run consequences of using low grade fuel.

I have a good friend that is a Toyota Master Diagnostic Tech and and we had a good chat. He is very confident that running 87 in the 3.3L V6 will not cause any long-term issues.
There have been posts where people are able to feel the difference between running 91 and 87 in the RX330, but a few years ago, I reset the ECU and tried a few tanks of premium and couldn't tell any difference. But, like I said, others have different experiences.
As with anything, YMMV.

Premium Gas?
So we just brought home our "new to our family", RX330 and the manual says for gasoline to use 87. I noticed though that everyone says they love how the RX does not need premium...so I'm confused. At least where we live, gas comes in three flavors besides diesel. 85, 87, 89. So for us, premium is 87.
Does that mean that my RX330 requires premium while all you other lucky ones don't need to? That kinda bums me out!
If I must, I must - but then that makes me wonder if from time to time I can get away with 85. Sometimes the price difference from 85 to 87 is 10 cents....sometimes it's more than 25. That makes it hard to swallow. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Keep in mind that you are "at altitude" and thus you have different fuels compared to the bulk of the country. The lack of oxygen up there means less power and less chance of engine knock. So, in Denver you get 85 octane fuel.
The Owner's Manual says for you to use 87 octane. It does not say anything about adjustments for altitude. I would run 87 octane fuel in your RX330 regardless. Should you ever come down from altitude you will not need to make any adjustments to your fueling habits.
As for the extra cost, the total might be around two hundred extra dollars for a year if you travel 15K miles a year and depending on the difference in gas prices. Is it not appropriate to use the fuel recommended for your vehicle instead of trying to just save a few bucks? It is not really all that much.
