Default Recommended? Change oil after 1st 1K miles

I've always heard from people that after you buy a new car, you should change the oil after the 1st 1000 miles, to clear out engine dust, bits of metal... etc..
What do people think?

Thanks

Default oil

Yes its an old school idea, however i tend to keep my cars a long time and i do change the first oil and filter at 1,500 miles, and every three after that. I think its cheap insurance. I have had vehicles with not enough differential grease from the factory and other issues that were caught at the early oil change. In addition its a good time to have lexus set your personal settings. Since my first change was free with my dealer it made it all the better.

Don't change the oil early with a Honda. The owners manual is clear that the oil should not be changed until the regularly scheduled maintenance. The factory oil has a higer content of "moly something or other," and should stay in until the first regular change.

As far as Lexus goes, they even eliminated the first maintenance at 30 days or 1000 miles; my dealer admitted that they didn't do anything, just got you back in to the dealership. They substituted that for Lexus Personalized Settings, a way to get you in to do one free change to the C-Best settings for door locks, power rear door, interior and exterior lighting.

Every 5,000 miles of Mobile 1. Don't fall for the oil company myth of changing that soon.

in the past, engines were manufactured to a considerably lesser standard than today. The "break-in" period served primarily to smooth up cylinder bores and bearing surfaces. These actions produced a few metal flakes that were carried away by the oil and held in suspension.

Today we can hold far tighter tolerences - even in mass production - than we could twenty or thirty years ago. The "break-in" period now focuses more on thermal stress relief. Gentle heating and cooling cycles for the first few miles help work out stresses in the block and heads that may have been created in the manufacturing process. Some small amount of bearing metal or cylinder scuff may find its way into the oil, but it is relatively insignificant.

Lubricants too are more sophisticated today, better able to clean, lubricate, and protect your engine under all operating conditions.

Just to further illustrate the myth of the frequent oil change - Porsche Cayenne Turbos get new Mobile 1 oil after 15,000 miles! If they'll recommend that for a $100,000 SUV, then you know its got to be safe.

According to the owner's manual on my Cayenne Turbo, it's 20,000 miles for the first oil change, using Mobile 1 SYNTHETIC oil. However, I did the first oil change at 7,000 miles; 20,000 miles is just way too long. The RX400h I recently purchased will replace the Cayenne Turbo as my daily driver.

P.S. Compared to the conventional oil in the Lexus, Synthetic oil in the Cayenne will last longer due to its chemical properties and characteristics.
