1000 miles oil change on RX330

I do mine at 1000-1500, after the initial break-in.
However, this is generally not to be done on Honda or Acura products. Honda uses a special break-in oil at the factory that they want left in for 3000 miles.

How do you remove the plastic cowling under the drain plug? I noticed only a small portion of the drain plug can be seen. I'm planning to change the oil of my new RX 330 at 1500 miles.

My dealer offers an oil change at 1k and at 5k for free. On the 5k change they put in Castrol synth oil with a Lexus brand filter. Not sure what the part number was on the filter, just that it is was labelled Lexus. Since then I've done one change at 9.5 using Mobil 1 synth and a Toyota 90915-YZZD1 filter.
There is a oil change / emission test shop near me that does oil changes for $10.00 if you have your own oil / filter. You can also stand right next to him and watch to see that it get done correctly. Great deal I think!

Plus...i'm sure they will be very messy (getting oil all over the place). Is very easy!

I'm planning to switch to Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil on my next oil change. It has an API specification of SM, SL / CF. My RX 300 calls for API specification of SJ and My RX 330 calls for API specification of SL . Can I use Mobil 1 with such API specs on both vehicles? I will appreciate an answer.

Oil Change Intervals

Respectfully, I don't think it says that; certainly not in the 2005 RX manual. I have looked throughout the manual and saw nothing on oil change intervals; just stuff on recommended oil viscosity (5w30) and oil consumption (burning oil) norms. If anyone knows otherwise, please by all means let us know what page this is on.
I talked to a few Lexus service managers and as usual got a variety of opinions on when the first oil change should be. Officially, I understand it to be at 5,000 miles, but a couple of service managers suggested dumping the factory oil at 1000 miles. As for me, I am old school; I dumped the factory oil at 300 miles wanting to get out any of the metal filings and factory manufacturing contaminants out of the system. I will go synthetic (Mobil 1 or Amsoil) after 1000-1200 miles. Some go to synthetic at 500 miles.
Extending oil change intervals in excess of 12,000 miles, even with synthetic, is pushing it, IMO (unless you are having your oil sampled and checked by a laboratory). Only with a special duty Ams Oil Filter would I even consider that, and then, changing oil every 12,000 or 6 months, which ever comes first. Personally, I think that a 5,000 mile interval with a quality synthetic is about right. If you are budget conscious maybe 6,000 - 7,500 highway miles. I would NEVER do that will conventional motor oil, especially if the car is frequently driven on short trips where the engine does not get to really warm up enough to burn off the gasoline and other contaminants which leach into the oil.
By the way, be aware that several oil companies are selling "full synthetic" oil which in fact is not synthetic in origin, but rather, just highly refined crude oil with lots of additives. While better than regular motor oil, it typically does not have the additives or the ability to last as long as a true synthetic oil can.
