Default E brake won't release on RX300 1999

The e brake pad releases in the car but the brake itself won't. The light stays on and everything. I've tried shifting between drive and reverse, slipping it into neutral and slowly releasing it I don't know what else to do. I don't have any money, I have a bad back and can't get under the car.

I'm a bit confused. Ignoring the light, do the brakes release or not?
Do you get that chime a bit after you start driving to warn you the brake is still engaged?

Welcome to Club Lexus.

There is a cable that runs from the foot pedal to underneath of the vehicle, which splits into two near the rear seats and then goes to each rear wheel. The wheel central part has the drum brake arrangement and the brake shoes expand inside to hold the drum.

That explained, I wish any one (including me) could remotely diagnose and fix your problem. You will have to either figure out yourself or have a mechanic do the figuring and the repair. It does not require Lexus certified mechanic.

If you have a FWD, then you can raise any rear wheel and try to spin it, to confirm if the brake is being released.

If only you could get under and confirm the tension in the cable is released when the e-brake is set to off...
